Question for anyone with a Banks iDash?

I have been looking for a display parameter, or PID, that will show when the torque converter is locked. I talked to someone with a 2020 F-350 and the iDash in their Ford has an entry in the "Transmission" group for "Torque Converter Status". I have seen a couple of online videos that show the Edge CTS3 on Rams and there is a indicator on the display that show when the TC is locked so the truck does have that PID. I just can not find it on my new iDash. There is one for "Torque Converter Slip", whatever that is for, but not for status of locked or unlocked. Does anyone know where it is in the menu? If not, I can call Banks on Tuesday if needed. Thanks!

I lost that option a few versions back. Use to show with what gear now doesn’t show on the updated firmware. Haven’t looked in a while honestly so see if they brought it back or not. Let us know what you end ip finding out if you call them.

Mine does show what gear it is in. Maybe that is because it is fresh out of the box and might be on an older version of the firmware? Although since I ordered it directly from Banks, I would thing it would not be too old. If the gear display is really gone from the most recent firmware versions, I will not be updating. I like having the gear display in one of the fields.

Strange that the truck would put out the torque converter status but the Banks software would not pick it up. Maybe others that use the iDash will post their experience.

And just to make sure I am understanding correctly for when I call Banks - You previously had the option to show torque converter Lock/Unlock status? But with a recent firmware update, that option was removed?

Correct. It still shows what hear and os snappy, but haven’t found the torque lock indicator recently since a few upgrades ago…

Lol didn’t even catch that. “It still shows the gear is is quick changing for the shifts”

You say you have torque converter slip

I had a scan gauge years ago in a tow rig and torque converter was locked when Torque converter slip = ~0

Thanks - I had no idea why they would have slip but not show it locked or not. How much slip is normal? Or the normal range? It seems logical that 0 slip would equal locked but I don't know much about how the torque converter works. Time for some reading I guess.

My Autoagent has slip (and lock status) and it hovers around 0 when locked. Maybe +/- 5 slip?

I also had a manual PID I added in torque pro that would show lock status, have no idea about the Banks device though.

I talked to Banks this morning and they are going to forward on to engineering that for the 2021 6.7 at least the torque converter lock status is gone. He seemed surprised that is was. I also asked him about monitoring the slip as a way to know lock status and he said it could be done but that the range of values was so small that there could be an overlap gray area of rpm values where you would not know if it was locked or not. The value shown on that gauge for completely free, unlocked, idling in Park, is about 19 or 20. I would have thought like you said that "0" would be locked, but it never seems to report a 0 rpm number. The lowest it ever seems to report is about 3. I asked if he thought that was normal and he said yes that he gets people reporting often that the slip is not at 0 even when locked. Seems counterintuitive, but it must just be something about the way the 6.7 is reporting the slip status or the way the Banks is translating it? Or maybe a locked TC is not really at 0 rpm, but can be at 2 or 3 rpms? Weird. I guess if you see the TC slip rpms at 16 and then they drop to 5, you can assume that the TC has locked. And conversely if TC Slip is at low single digits and it jumps to high teen numbers, it has unlocked. Who knows what to think if it is at 6, 8, or 10???

He is also emailing me the previous few versions of firmware from August, October and November of 2020 in case anyone wants to revert and see if lock status is returned. I may not bother doing that though as some of the updates from the last few firmware versions seem desirable. Rather than get TC lock status back and lose the recent updates, I may just live without the TC lock status, watch the TC slip numbers, and wait to see if Banks engineering can get lock status back in a future update.

I realize all this is not critical to use of the truck, I'm just odd like that and just enjoy watching numbers and gauges.

If anyone wants the old firmware versions he is going to be sending me, PM me.

I saw the same thing with an older iDash 4.3" that never really showed Locked Y/N like the Edge I had previously did.

Not Banks, but I’ve been looking to get the TC lock display on my IPhone via OBDLINK. Even with their ‘enhanced’ FCA MY2021 codes, there are no PIDS being read from the transmission. There is, however, a ‘torque converter slip’ PID coming out of the engine control module. That appears to display a reading of +/- 5 units or so when the TC should be locked up (4th gear and up). It does not hold a steady zero. There is also a Engine Torque Mode PID which I haven’t played with yet.

Thanks for confirming how I understood that.

OBDLink has updated PID's?

I've been using Torque with the same old Cummins added PID's that have been around forever and there are several that are wrong (trans temp shows coolant temp value)

Their app has free Enhanced OEM Add ons for 2006-2021 FCA vehicles in addition to their standard SAE PIDS. I’m a newbie to this so still finding my way but as soon as the app recognised the truck via the MX+ dongle it kinda hand held me through the download. Once that is done it scans the vehicle for PIDs it supports.

Ah, I never used their app, just paired it to my phone(s) and laptop and ran AlfaOBD and Torque. LOL

@Will_T Just curious, where would the option to show what gear it’s in be, IF I have it? I’m not seeing it anywhere, unless I’m missing something.

How do I get a manual PID for the torque pro app to show lock status?
