Hello all. Checking to see if anyone has or is building a chassis cab configuration. I plan, this year hopefully, to get out of my 2500 and into a 3500, but I want the chassis cab. I always looked into getting a tray for my previous two 2500's but never did it. I want one for the new HD I get, but figured why spend the extra for a bed that I'm just not gonna need or have to get rid of. I saw on the Ram site the chassis cab is configurable to pretty much most of the desirable trim lines. I'm looking into a Laramie and the chassis cab is quite a bit less than getting one with the options I want than a complete truck with a bed. I understand that depending on the tray I choose will offset that cost. I've been researching tray options out there, mainly the Norweld, and I'm sure there are lesser pricey options I have yet to see. I want the goose/neck 5th wheel prep, but don't see that as an option. I'm assuming since what ever tray or flat bed that will be purchased for it, that will need to be added. Has anyone done this or looking into doing this? What are the pros and cons of such a thing? BTW, the red seat belt option on these look pretty cool too! Haha. Thanks!

Going the chassis route you can't get the gooseneck prep as that is something done with who ever builds your deck. They also don't come with a rear hitch just so you know. Can't say for sure but you might be able to get dual fuel tanks. The frame is different between a chassis cab and regular truck and box setup as well.

Thanks for the info. I did see the option for lather fuel tanks and dual fuel tanks in the rear. Didn't realize about it not coming with a rear hitch. Was curious about the frame. So it is a beafier frame? I noticed the payload and towing capacity is quite a bit more than the standard 3500.

Honestly, best to read here.

The one thing I am not sure is the ability to get the HO engine. You are looking at a 3500 srw and I have a customer that was able to order a 3500 drw cab and chassis with it the HO. Dealer screwed up the first time and ordered the SO, but he waited and got the HO.

In terms of the hitch, my 5500 it was something that was done from the bed installer. I have an 2021 f600 cab and chassis coming in which I have a van body box going to be installed, that hitch will be done though by a local guy.

Order the backup camera and towing package if you do cab and chassis.

I was specing it out and the HO isn't offered with SRW nor is the bigger tanks, 52gal and 22gal option. Just the 22gal which is fine with me and no 4.10 rear which I thought was odd. I definitely will add the backup cam. I think the tow package I saw was heavy duty tow which comes with different gears and dually. I'll keep looking into it.Thanks again for the info.

How much payload you looking to support? What are you putting in the back? A truck camper? I ask because I have gone the journey starting out in a 2019 Ram 2500 6.7l then going to a 2019 3500 CCLB DRW 6.7L Pickup body, and now on to a 2022 Ram 5500 60" Cab and Chassis build, when orders open, to support a 6,000 lb plus Truck camper. The 3500 DRW was just too close to the limits on axle ratings and way over GVWR. I did all of this in about a year time :( Only saving grace was the used car market is super hot right now so I got a lot more for my 3500 than I paid for it about a year ago. Just sold the 3500 this week. Just make sure you think about the max payload you will ever want to support. I am going to put a CM aluminum SK body on the RAM 5500 cab and chassis to support the massive Host Everest camper. A company StableCamper is working on a partnership with CM beds to make a flatbed kit with additional storage boxes and tie down adapters for supporting a large truck camper.

I hear ya. I know how that goes with needing a new truck as your needs and wants change. This is why I feel I should get the 3500 Cab and chassis. I have always liked the idea of a flatbed due the versatility. But on my 2500 I don't feel it would be worth doing due to the lack of a high payload capacity. As of right now I only plan on using the cab and chassis to tow my 14.5K lb RV with the gooseneck king pin and to haul my motorcycle on the back and possibly haul a UTV. It might seem like overkill for right now, but later on I would like to possibly have a light weight off-road flatbed camper and to just have the versatility to do what I want in the back. I'm still looking into all options. I do like the idea of a 4500 or 5500. I'll keep researching. Thanks for the input!

You may want to consider a 4500 with 4.11 axles with your payload. Empty my 2021 5500 sucks 25% more fuel with the 4.55 gears vs my 2016 ram 3500 srw. I haul close to limit payload on my 5500 and runs awesome. Tow haul with full exhaust brake I barely touch the brakes I find. Fuel economy is a little worse then anticipated, hence the recommendation.

Go to a dealer that knows how to build these and see what is possible. The online tool is not correct when building. One example comes to mind. The 12 inch screen is not an option on a slt, yet you go look at the official option pdf and it is. My brother's 5500 slt has it, which was what had me dig deeper.

Yikes.. you are going to want more than 22 gallons. My truck has 31 gallons and that is not enough either.

No, 74 total. 52 and 22gal option is what I'm gonna order. I was using the Ram site builder, which sucks. I thought the 22gal was in addition to the 31gal, but not so. Silly that the 22gal option even exists since it replaced the 31gal. Went to the dealer and talked to the commercial guy and he verified. So yes, I'll be ordering it with the 52 and 22...DEFINITELY! Haha

Yep definitely. Thanks. The Ram site builder is pretty wonky. I can select certain options during a build. Go back to it again and it doesn't allow. I visited the commercial guy yesterday and we built out a 3500 SRW w/4.10. Don't feel like I need a dually. It might be overkill for me. Was concerned about the ride. Did drive a 3500 CC DRW with a flat bed on it. Drove fine. Would the SRW drive/ride better?

I also notice in the 3500 Tradesman Chassis Cab I drove, it had the black headliner instead of the tan. It looked sharp and made a big difference. Definitely want that as well. Hope it's not just an option on the Tradesman. I'll find out tmrw.

The SRW will definitely ride nicer with 2 less tires on the ground transferring bumps into the cab.

That said, we just completed a 1200 mile trip from Seattle to SoCal with an empty 3500 DRW and I truly have 0 complaints. I dropped all 4 rear tires to 58 psi and she did fantastic. Had my whole family with me and everyone was very comfortable.

Good to hear. I'm actually thinking hard about the DRW more now. More benefits I think. Just didn't want to have to spend on two extra tires later on. Haha. Plus I think the DRW would just look more proportioned with the flat bed on. Looking into a CM AL ER. Thx.
