What should I initially do to my truck as far as paint protection, accessories, etc.?

While I am waiting for my 2500 Big Horn to arrive, I am learning a lot of this forum and am trying to figure out what needs to be done right away to the truck when I receive it to help me take care of it from the start. I will start by saying I tend to take pretty good care of my vehicles and am probably easier on them than a lot of people. This truck will be a secondary/recreational vehicle and not driven daily. The SUV it is replacing has only been averaging about 4-5k miles per year and I expect this truck to get similar mileage and also end up sitting in the garage most of the time. Sometimes I will go a week or more without needing to use my current one so will have to just go out and take it for a drive sometimes. I am getting the bed package with the new truck so the liner is taken care of and also some wheel to wheel side steps. First thing I would like to address is keeping the paint in good shape. I read about people getting ceramic coating or PPF and wonder if anything like that is going to be necessary. This will always be garaged and driven pretty infrequently. I live in the northwest US and it rarely snows so there is not a lot of salt or sand on the road. I plan to mostly use this to go camping in the summer time, pull a trailer eventually, go on some longer road trips and go up skiing a few times a year in the winter. Even for the camping, I don't go on a lot of gravel roads or anything like that. My current 20 yo Tahoe still looks in pretty good shape as far as the paint and the painted bumper on it is good as well. I do have a bug shield on it so maybe that helped the hood a bit. I guess for starters I would like to know, for the conditions I mentioned above, should I be find just leaving this as it is and waxing it a couple times a year like I have always done for my vehicles? Does a bug shield help much on these (although I don't know how much I would like the look of it on this truck)? Are mud flaps a good idea?

As far as the inside, I got the Mopar floor mats so those look like they protect the floor pretty well. What about the cloth seats? Would it be a good idea to spray those with something to help repel any dirt or stains? Should the 12" screen get a screen protector? Maybe tint? I don't need super dark where you can't even see in, but maybe tint the front side windows the same as whatever the factory rear tint is? Anything else for the interior?

The only other thing I will need to get is a tonneau cover. Someday I may want a cap because I do like the idea of just having stuff back there locked and dry and able to store stuff higher than the height of the bed, but I also like the idea of the bed open for bigger things if needed. Maybe I don't need a top of the line one as I won't be using it that often, but still something to keep the camping gear back there out of the rain while driving and able to keep it covered and somewhat secure. I can research those later and decide if I want a roll up or tri fold.

I thought about a warranty just because of all of the electronics. Since I won't put many miles on it, the Ziegler ones for 8 years/75k miles seem like a decent deal, since I will reach the years before the miles. What do you think?

Anyways, those are just a few things I thought of beforehand in case they need to be done right away, I will be prepared for them. Let me know what else you think of. Thank you!

I added a Dee Zee bedmat, even with a spray in they still help with protecting the bed and keeping your liner in good shape. I also added vent visor window deflectors to allow the windows to be cracked slightly while parked without needing to worry about rain. I'm using the Griots garage ceramic products and am happy so far with the shine and ease of use. It seems to wash up nicely as well.

I am not familiar with that. Is that just a product you put on yourself like wax, unlike the ceramic coating people get done professionally?

Tint yes, screen protector yes, I like my cheap Gator roll up tonneau cover so far for the money invested, I opted to not do PPF as it was very expensive and really won't protect from everything( I can have the front end painted for less when the chips come) and ceramic coatings are all over the board.

If you are into DIY check out: https://r1coatings.com

I hear good things about it and have a buddy that just ordered some. They have a sale going on right now.

Yeah I don't mind DIY. I think I agree with the PPF as it does sound pretty pricey. I look at both vehicles I have now and neither of the bumpers look very bad. I imagine if you are on a lot of gravel roads or have sand and stuff kicked up all the time, it might be worse, but hopefully the front end will be ok without it. From what I have read about ceramic coating, it sounds like it is to protect the pain from sun, dirt, birds, etc. and if that is the case, it probably won't be as beneficial to me if it is garaged most of the time too then, right? How much did your Gator roll up cost you?

I have 3M film on the front to protect from chips etc. Had the underbelly anti-rust spray and that's about it, the rest of the accessories are up to you. I had window deflectors on my previous truck and really loved them so this new truck will get them too.

I think I paid $270 shipped through tonneaucoversworld.com and if you do a chat to verify fitment and ask for their best price they will save you some ching.

I went with AVS in channel vent shades. Like them a lot. I get my vehicles fluid filmed annually. It's worth the money for us in the snow/salt belt.

Parking it in a garage is THE BIGGEST/ BEST thing you can do to your new pickup! Removes it from the:
- Weather
- Temperature cycles
- Sun damage

As you have seen with your Tahoe, parking in a garage is the best thing you can do.

Enjoy that new rig!

So you think I am ok with nothing? Not even a hood protector/bug shield? That will make things easier. The thing with the Tahoe is that of those 20 years, it probably spent about 5 out of the garage when I didn't have room. And to be honest, I probably haven't washed it or waxed it as much as I used to, but it still look great!

Our hoods are fairly flat. There is a little bit of lip at the front, but not much concern for paint chipping from road debris like older versions (more curve over).
I think there is nothing wrong with a bug deflector...I put one on my wife's 2018 Highlander for the exact reason I mentioned above...and it looks good.

My 2021 is showing up in about 10 days. Plan is to immediately xpel ppf and ceramic window tint Installed. I have xpel on another car and have been really pleased. Lots of rocks on Colorado roads. Ceramic window tint does wonders in the Colorado sun as well, even with my garaged vehicles.

After that, I’ll do a paint correction and CarPro ceramic coat. That said, mine will be parked outside, hence the ceramic coat. If I were garaging it, sealant / wax would work just fine as long as you refresh it every 3-6 months. Just depends how concerned you are about it. Finding a good mobile detailer who comes out periodically can do wonders as well.

I'm planning to PPE the front bumper to help protect it, and tint the windows. Install Tonneau Cover.. Thinking about the Bak MX4 and the BaK Box 2.
I think I will stick to seasonal waxing.

That's a good point. So with them being higher up and also flatter, the hood should be pretty well off without anything? When I look at my Nissan Altima, which is typical low to the ground, very curved hood, where it is very vulnerable to rocks, that hood doesn't even look that bad for having 150k miles on it so maybe I will be fine. Like I said, the roads don't need to be sanded often around here. Still, I will have to look at some pictures and see what a deflector looks like on these trucks.

I will need to do a little more research into this, but what is a rough average of how much PPF should cost for the front bumper and how much a tint should cost?

I'm in Canada. From a reproable shop I was quotes $175 to tint the front 2 windows (Basically to match the factory tint of the back windows).
and $250 to wrap the front bumper. ( I do not know what product this was quoted with, but I believe Xpel. Other product they offer is Autobahn Road Guard ).

I've found that the flat front gets the heck chipped out of it on interstates. So, the bumper and lower bumper area for sure. I put XPel on mine. Also, the front lip of the hood would take a great deal of damage. I have an appt to get XPel on the front part of my hood, the painted bumper area, and the headlights.

I wash once in a while and use a product called Last Coat instead of wax..then drive it like I stole it..no garage queen here.

What kind of pricing are you looking at for the bumper, front lip of hood, headlights, etc.?
