Audio Steering Controls Retrofit

Thanks for this thread write up and posts @Bandit400. Just pulled the trigger on all the parts needed to upgrade my Tradesman steering wheel to what you guys did. Looking forward to having radio controls (and leather) on my steering wheel again. I got rid of a 2019 2500 gasser Big Horn w/Night ED package for my current 2020 Cummins Tradesman. Only features I miss are the steering wheel controls and the 8.4" Uconnect with Android Auto/Apple Car play. I have all those parts needed on order as well!
Glad to help! Sorry to all, I still owe a consolidated write up with pictures. I will post it soon :)

I ended up swapping my steering wheel for the sake of getting a heated steering wheel, thanks @Bandit400 for posting info on how to pull the airbag, I was trying to follow a video for a 2018 and it was totally different, this thread saved me. I did actually end up doing this specific mod though, because after i swapped in the heating steering wheel, I had a spare wheel with radio controls, so i swapped it into my 5500 delivery truck at the shop. One question though, after doing the heated steering wheel swap in my 2500, i discovered this spring on the floor and have no idea where it could've come from. Any ideas?

Everything seems to work fine, so I don't know where it could've come from.

Looks like the spring that goes in the bottom of the turn signal, mine fell out when i was replacing the clock spring.

Huh, my turn signal works fine? I guess I'll take a closer look at it when I get home.

It might be the spring for the 3 blink feature. Have you tried to see if that feature still works?

The only place that looks like the spring would fit is this hole on the bottom of the turn signal box... Idk what purpose it would serve beyond making it easier to pop the assembly out.

I have no idea what it does but a spring did come out of that hole when i removed my turn signal.

My guess is it just puts a little tension on the turn signal assembly to minimize any play or slop.

You were able to swap a Tradesman wheel to a heated leather? How did you enable the heating function? Was there additional wiring?

I needed a heated steering wheel clock spring, and a heated seat module to control it, no additional wiring necessary, it was all there in the column and under the driver seat.

What about for the dashboard switch or the function on the uConnect?

I have a Uconnect 12" so there was no dashboard switch, i just had to enable heated seats and steering wheel in alfaOBD.
Good deal! Thanks for the reply. It would be nice to see a write up on the retrofit.

Is alfaOBD pretty updated for the 19+ HDs? What all have you done to your Tradesman with alfaOBD? I haven't screwed with it since my 4th gen 1/2 ton.

Answers to your questions are all over this site. Read a little. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

Will a wheel off of a 2019 1500 work in the 2500? part numbers are different.

I don't think so, the 5th gen 1500 wheels are very different, idk about the 1500 classic wheels, i think they are different also cause the airbag release was different on my 2019 2500 vs a 2018 1500 classic.

Edit: Apparently I missed the part mentioning the need for a new steering wheel harness.

How am I not seeing it? Trying to swap steering wheels but I can't find where the controls plug into.

Looks like you may not have the correct wiring harness for the audio controls. I purchased a used, complete wheel with all wiring and parts
