I live in the republic of California and am purchasing my truck from Phil at Bud Clary in Washington. He says I will pay CA sales tax through him and pay registration through him. I am wondering what the process is when I get back to CA.
I have seen some people speculate what the process is, but was hoping someone who has done it recently could chime in.
If you recently purchased a new truck from out of state and live in California, what is the process for Ca registration?

I bought mine brand new in Vegas in 2019. He is right. I paid CA tax and registration through the dealer. I drove it home and had to immediately get it a smog and VIN verification. Then they sent plates.

Did you have to get truck weighed.

I also bought through Phil, live in SoCal, and hope to pick up my truck early next month.. in a few weeks.

From my research, we will have to:

1. Weigh the truck at a certified scale ( you know, so we can pay that wonderful "weight" fee in CA)
2. Smog the truck
3. VIN verification--either through private party or at the DMV

Once these things are done, you should be able to present those certificates at the DMV along with proof that you paid sales tax and registration with Phil, and get your plates.

I did not have to get it weighed. The VIN verification form has a spot for the weight and I just put what was on the door sticker. CHP office can also do Them.

I bought in Texas and had it shipped to me. I paid registration and taxes to the dealer and they paid CA.

The DMV required a weight cert, smog cert and a VIN verification.

Interesting.. two opposing experiences below.

Did you appear live at the DMV or did you process through the phone and/or online?

Same question, did you tag it in person at the DMV or online?

I went to the DMV for the VIN inspection. Quick and easy. No appt needed. The inspector asked for the weight cert and checked the VIN. I had to use my phones camera to take a pic of the VIN as it was too tall for him. Everything else was done through my dealer in Texas. I mailed them the weight cert, VIN and smog inspection and they had the plates sent to me.

I just did this on Tuesday. I purchased in Las Vegas and paid sales tax to the dealer. The dealer asked me where I wanted the DMV paperwork sent. I had them send it to a third party DMV business near me. The business called me Tuesday and said they had it.
Got the smog check done. Weighed the truck at my local Pilot. The registration place did the VIN verification and I paid them for the registration fees and left with plates. They charged $60 for the service. Well worth it not having to go to DMV.

That’s awesome. Wish there was a place like that around me. Where are you located and what’s the name of that registration place?

Just curious, what are you saving from buying out of state? or is this just the right build you are finding?
I am in CA and just bought in CA

I was not able to find any deals in Ca. Every dealer wanted sticker price or more and would not even consider an order. I was able to order what I wanted at invoice pricing.
I have bought my last 3 trucks out of state and saved 8-10k on the last 2 and 3-5k on this one. The last 2 were purchased in Arizona and sales tax stayed there. A bonus not giving Ca any more money to waste.

I bought mine out of state because I couldn't find the truck I wanted within 250 miles.

I can't see paying for the service. I never stepped foot inside the DMV. Just drove up to the DMV inspection lane. 2 cars and 10 mins later I drove away. Went across the street to Wild Barrel brewing to pick up some beers. Mailed my forms and done.

In Southern California you will wait hours and hours yo even get inside a DMV. Appointments are months away. Any amount of money is worth it to me.

I am in SoCal. A very busy DMV too. Fortunately you don't have to go inside or make an appt for VIN inspection. I will feel the DMV pain when I go for my Real ID soon though. Dreading that for sure.

Did the Real ID thing a while ago. That was no fun. I am moving out of this state this year so hopefully no more Ca DMV trips.

We are a couple years away until we hop on a boat and head out.
