My new PW seems to bounce between 50-70 mph

I just picked up my '21 75th anniversary edition PW yesterday. It's an awesome truck. Traded in my '18 Rebel when I saw this truck. Love it.

That said, I purchased the truck in Grapevine, TX and live in Houston (4hr drive) as there aren't many of these PWs around with the 75th package. My test drive, like most, was limited to around the block. I think I got 5 miles on it driving around the dealership. As such, I wasn't able to get it up to highway speeds. It drove great, very smooth, around the local area. It was when I left to head home that I found a noticeable shutter or wobble when driving between 50-70 mph or so.

Has anyone else experienced this? I know I'm not imagining this. Not sure if this is a wheel balancing issue or a suspension issue. As in, is the truck too tall and the suspension too soft with wind resistance making it flutter a bit?

I'm obviously new to the PW arena and appreciate any and all thoughts and advice with this one.

My first thought was wheel balancing. That would be the first thing I would have checked.

Start with that and see if it fixes the issue. If not then you can move on to other possibilities.

Good luck and keep us updated! My 75A is in transit to Minnesota and due in the next 3-3.5 weeks!

I would also check your tire pressure. Many folks have had close to 100 PSI in the tires when taking possession which severely impacts road manners.

Most common would be a wheel balance issue. Either way, take advantage of that warranty and get it back to the dealer.

.

yup tire psi too high even if it is set at 60 front 65psi back. Some road surfaces can induce a bouncy ride regardless of what tire pressure is. empty there is no reason the rear needs to be at 65psi try 40psi.

yup....

I have found that PSI is often wonky when picked up for delivery. My JKUR was waaaay off at delivery.

Thanks for the feedback. My guess is the front passenger's wheel is out of balance. I wouldn't doubt the tire pressure isn't helping as it got up to around 70 psi on my drive home. I say that one wheel specifically because there's more weights stuck on that wheel than I've ever seen on a wheel. The other 3 wheels have 4 to 6 1/4 oz pieces attached. The right front has what looks like an entire box of these weights on it. I'm exaggerating for effect here, but it seriously had at least 10-12" worth of weights on it. My guess is the factory had a bad wheel and tried to compensate with a ton of weight to fix the issue.

I'm dropping it off at the local dealer tomorrow. They said they'd balance all the wheels and do an alignment. Hopefully it's that simple. I'll update this thread when I get my truck back.

Hope all goes well for you!

So, I took it to the local stealership yesterday. The lady in the service dept told me over the phone when I called this in a few days ago they'd balance all the wheels and do an alignment. I show up and she apparently has no clue what I'm talking about and tells me they'll balance the wheels and charge me $165 plus tax if they determine this isn't warranty related. I laughed in her face along with another service advisor and said I'll drive the truck back to Grapevine and drop it off for a full refund if they claim this is my fault.

On a side note, while I was talking to the advisor, my wife was in the parking lot looking at new cars. While out there, she witnesses two sales staff jump in a black TRX and peel out of the parking lot. While telling me of this, we watch someone from the service dept take a gray Challenger that I just saw dropped off and do the same thing... peel out leaving the dealership lot. What gives here??? I immediately went and talked to the manager over the service dept and told him what we witnessed. I told him I was very concerned that my new PW would end up on YouTube and abused.

Later that day, we go pick up my truck. The tech wrote in the file they couldn't replicate the issue but they went ahead and balanced the wheels anyway per the service manager. What?? How could you not replicate the issue being that it starts vibrating violently as you hit the gas.

Well, the balancing helped tremendously. It rides much, much smoother now. I still get a little vibration when hitting bumps. I'm guessing that's more to do with the factor lift on these trucks. I've never had a lifted truck before. I've dropped a Mustang though.

Hmmmm...sounds like a negative service department experience but with a positive outcome. Hope it was the right fix and you don't need to go back.

Agreed. Now I just have to take it back to get one of the Rambox lids replaced as it was warped when I picked up the truck. That's a whole other fiasco though. The fix "should" be straightforward.

I am so glad I have a great service department at our dealership. Never once have we ever had a bad service experience since 2006.

I'm jealous. I've fired 4 Ram dealers so far in my local area due to bad experiences. Not sure why it's so difficult to deliver a decent customer experience in the service depts. Too many times have I been told one thing at drop-off only to pick up my vehicle and be let down.

Is it all the time? Or on certain sections of road? We have a section of interstate by our house that my old Ram 1500 club cab would bounce on. No other vehicle did, but the Power Wagon does. I blame it on the wheelbase and some flaw in the construction of the road that syncs with the wheelbase.

Prior to getting the wheels rebalanced, it would vibrate really bad as you gave it gas. It's much better now after the balancing. That said, my PW doesn't like the concrete roads in Houston. Lots of vibration, but I understand that is due in large part to the seriously stiff springs.

The interstate I refer to is concrete. One reason I know the road is causing the bouncing is that the bouncing abruptly goes away at a certain point of the road. That is with both the 1500 and the PW. I'm pretty sure the wheelbase length is matching the segments in the road or something like that, or height variations in the segments of road that the concrete planer didn't take out.

The vibration you describe is different. I wouldn't call the bouncing I'm describing vibration. The bouncing is irritating, and seems to be tied to wheelbase length.

Lucky my experience so far has been great at my local RAM dealer. I'm in a small town though and it's the only RAM dealer. I bet that has a lot to do with it since competition is so high here between the truck dealers.

When I was back in Cali they had tons of dealers and the service was sh*t. I had probably 10 cars living in socal over 20 years and the only dealer that had amazing service was the Crevier BMW dealer.

As for the bounce issue, I noticed a similar issue going from my 1500 to my PW. I am sure for my issue tho, it is caused by sections of highway or road when I experience this bounce. it does not seem random and it is constant with certain areas in the city.

Side note: Sorry to hear about your crap CS

Anyone find a solution to the bouncing? My 75A edition does the same thing. I’ve been chasing it since I bought the truck. I tried tire pressure, replaced tires and the dealer says all is fine. It’s made me car sick and I’ve never had that problem before. Thanks!
Tire pressure greatly improved the ride for mine. I dropped the PSI to 42 in the front and 40 in the back. I also replaced my wheels and tires with 18x9 wheels and 35" Nitto RidgeGrapplers. The ride is significantly better. That said, there's still more bounce than I'd like, but it's really only noticeable on certain concrete roads here in Houston.
I'm planning to replace the shocks later this year in hopes that will help. I'd love to get the Carli Commuter suspension package, but it's too rich for me. I just reached out to them and asked if their customized Fox 2.0 shocks will work on our trucks without a lift kit.

My family had a tire dealership for years. Here are a few things to do. If you notice the shake in the steering wheel it is most likely balance in the front tires. Feel it more in the seat it is probably in the rear tires. Try driving it at speed when it vibrates and put the tranny in neutral and see if the vibration goes away. If it does it is probably something in the drive train. It could also be a driveline out of balance or not sequenced like it should be. Many of these large tires and speed rated tires have nylon overlay caps in the tread area. If they sit for a while especially in hot weather they develop a flat spot that will vibrate for a few miles until the tire heats up and then it will run smooth again. This is what happened to all tires back when they were bias ply and not radials. All this being said my new 22 was absolutely smooth until I put 35 inch tires on and now I get a occasional vibration but I have not had enough time to isolate it yet.
