Has anyone had any issues getting insurance for these trucks? I went online to add my new 3500 to my Liberty Mutual policy and it wouldn't accept the VIN. I started chatting with an agent, and he told me that the truck requires "Commercial vehicle insurance" because it is over 10,000 pounds GVWR.

He provided me with a list of local companies, none of which I had ever heard of.

On a whim, I checked out Geico's website, and had a new policy set up in 10 minutes with no issues.

Anyways, just curious if others have run into this issue, and I figured I would post about it in case other new buyers run into the same issue, they will have an answer here.

I had the same issue. I had to insure my 3500 on a separate policy with Geico.

Yep... I switched to Geico. With that said, I actually ended up saving money by switching, and my previous truck was a Raptor.

I was going the Cab & Chassis route and that is where Geico's line in the sand was. They'll insure a DRW as long as it comes off the showroom floor with a bed (includes F450s). As soon as you start talking about true C&C trucks, they differ to commercial insurance.

I got a few quotes to go the commercial route and it was substantially more expensive.

Some company's can be trouble but no it does not require comertial insurance unless used commercially

Progressive is good, but will only insure a truck that has a factory bed and is under 12,000 GVW, anything over that is commercial in their eyes. The biggest problem I had with commercial insurance with my F350 flatbed (12,500 GVW) was any trailer I pulled had to be listed and insured separately, unlike standard insurance that covers up to a certain amount of anything towed.

Geico is awesome. I have them for auto, home, and RV. If you get Geico makes sure you ask for mechanical breakdown insurance. It’s basically a 100,000 miles warranty for your truck that costs almost nothing. If you have a breakdown, you pay a $250 deductible and Geico pays the rest.

Do you work for them ? Sounds like it.

All kidding aside, interested in knowing more about this breakdown insurance. Sounds like it may be powertrain related, which is the part I'm least concerned about. It's all the do-dads that I fear will go right after the 3/36 ends.

No I don’t work for them.

I didn’t even know about it until I switched to them. Call an agent and ask them about it. I’m not sure if it is just powertrain.

You can always try Zeigler for a Maxcare. They have the best pricing. You can also use code PAYINFULL to get an extra discount from them.

I have progressive on my 3500 gvw 12300 and no issues. Have it insured for business and personal use. Cheapest out of all the quotes I got under 2k a year for full coverage with 250$ deductible.

I could have insured my F350 through them, I just didn’t want that chance of something happening and them denying the claim because I didn’t read their “fine print”...

I just got a quote from state farm for a Cab & Chassis 4500. Had to go through their commercial insurance dept. The cost is quite a bit higher than my other policies at $750 per six months.
