Transfer case granades on the highway

I’m sorry to even post this here. And delete it if it has to be, But my brother is having some problems. He sold his 08 Cummins 2 days ago. The guy drove it 3 hours home. The next day he says he is going to work and the transfer case Grenades on the highway. He says it did it when he went to pass someone. He heard vibrating and then it went. It cracked the transmission, ripped fuel lines broke the front driveshaft and blew a hole in the floor. I find it almost impossible that a transfer case just explodes going down the highway. Not even in 4x4, the road was dry. He’s asking for money now. I’m thinking he may have thrown it in 4x4 rolling at around 70mph by accident thinking it was the radio or something. Do you think that’s probably what happend? What do you guys think it could be.

Have seen carnage like that when the front drive shaft goes. The fact that he felt vibrations points to a bad joint, maybe the double cardan. And he kept his foot in it. Hopefully the receipt given by your brother stated "in as is condition, no warranty".

That is a possible issue with the 241 t case (i cant remember if thats the exact case but the 3rd gen cummins did have some happen like this) the case will crack then split wide open he didn't cause it but you owe him nothing did he bought a used vehicle that can happen he drove 3 hrs without issue.....

Depends where you are but all used sales are as is by default and after 24hrs they cant come back on the seller

It would have been gradual unless it threw a u joint cap, i have seen that happen to a buddies truck i had to tow him home lol this 3rd gen had the tcase blow from the front shaft completely different result

The truck was also just lifted 4” about 2 months ago. Could the angles for the drive shaft been skewed enough to cause a problem?

Nope im guessing he was testing the trucks power a few to many times

Yes there is no axle disconnect on the 3rd gens so the front shaft is always spinning

That's what happens on those trucks when that little hidden button head grease fitting that is in between the double u joints on the front driveline at the tcase never gets greased.

As I understand it, the front drive line is always spinning even in 2WD and is not under torque pressure from the engine/transfer case. When 4WD is select, then the front drive line, diff and front axles are engaged and under torque pressure from the transfer case/engine.

No the front drive shaft is not always spinning there may be some residual spinning but usually not anything to speak of due to the CAD system


EDIT* i forgot this was about a 3rd gen which had no CAD so yes the shaft spins in 2wd unless you have added freewheeling hubs
