Well that sucks. How were they selling 18 HD’s for 15 k off
Sorry, I think we're talking at cross purposes. I was just talking about FCA incentives, not dealer discounts. The $15k you are referencing are dealer discounts, those are dealer specific and come through their profit margin and will vary dealership by dealership based upon their own particular economics (dealers get kickbacks from FCA based upon how many RAM's they sell, total vehicles they sell, FCA financing, etc..) so volume dealers might be willing to sell at cost or a few hundred on each sale because if they sell 10k vehicles (made up number) in a month, they'll get $100k in kickbacks from FCA.
My $1k number was only the factory incentives available nationally to everybody, not dependent on a particular dealer.
Also, I'll throw this out there - there's always the $100 Tread Lightly membership that gets you an affiliate number. It supposedly gets you 1% under invoice pricing. Now, as I mentioned above, even "invoice pricing" is a bunch of BS because it doesn't take into consideration dealer holdback, FCA dealer incentives for selling volume, or FCA dealer incentives for getting you into a Chrysler Capital loan. So "invoice" is a misnomer even though it might technically be what the dealership paid FCA to buy the vehicle. But the good thing about it is that it holds true across all dealerships and isn't contingent on any of those things, so even low volume dealers have to give you that price even if they normally wouldn't.
For example, I'm looking at Power Wagons, and it's difficult to find one equipped the way I want. But there's one in transit to a non-volume dealer about 4 hours away. MSRP $67,555. Internet Price (after requesting price) $63,990 (including $1k current incentive) = Dealer discount of $2,565. After giving them my Tread Lightly FCA affiliate number the price is now $61,219 (including $1k current incentive) which essentially comes to a dealer discount of $5,336.
Bottom line is that the $100 Tread Lightly membership returned over $2,500 in cost savings, and it's good even at low volume dealerships and you don't have to deal with any other restrictions like using FCA financing. I'd recommend the membership just so you have that price in your pocket. Besides, it's an environmental non-profit that works to preserve open space to balance off-roading and the environment, so it's still a good cause regardless if you ultimately use it or just use it as a starting point in negotiations.
