Trailer Camera

Thanks,

Did you ever confirm the 2020 AUX2 connections? I think Phil was also looking for where those terminated at the radio end so he could wire up AUX2?
I don’t have a truck available to try it on, but I’m guessing it’s 24 (signal) & 25 on the radio connector. There’s only one other analog input possibility, and that’s 31 & 32. If someone wants to check it out, these are the terminals for those pin locations on the radio connector- https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetai...DO4dcOxrTo7CGec4q0rAKYyNkA==&tetid=MuZSUWoENz

Hey guys. I'm still a little confused on what the difference between shield and return is?

It looks like Phil put the video & shield into the return pin.

Or is that perhaps audio?

I have my Ford harness 99% built and am just waiting for some sample parts (female pins for the 6-pin Molex MX150) and then I'll be ready to wire it up - but I want to test with jumpers first and am quite confused about how to wire the 4-pin camera cable.

NM, Figured it out. The return is the video outer shield on the 4-pin to RCA adapter. I just have to meter where they are getting that from.

P.S. The Brandmotion 9002-7801V2 camera kit that's been recommended has BS specs. They claim 90* horizontal view angle and it is only 70*. I'm a little pissed about that. I bought that kit expecting to get a 90* camera which is what I need. 70* won't even see past the end of my boat when I aim it down to see the hitch for hookups.

I got the ford harness as well and I’m having some issues. Can u tell me how you reconfigured the ford 12pin plug to work for ram? I thought I did it correctly but when I activate the camera on the truck I get a weird image. I’m not getting the blue screen anymore so it is somewhat talking with the camera but clearly an issue remains.

I was preparing a bigger writeup, but here's what I currently have in all it's ugly splendor with the Ford pinouts vs the RAM pinouts. The AUX2 are still a swag until I can check and I just got the pins in I need to do this but won't be able to get back to it until after 12-4-20.

The Ford doesn't have a ground running to the 6-pin MX150 connector (4 used). It has Power, shield, Vid+, Vid-. They must be picking up ground (which you could as well) from the camera chassis connection but I didn't want to have to have my trailer hooked up to check the camera.

I added/split the ground from the 12-pin (WH) going to the 4-pin (TE MQS) TPMS connector and added one to the 6-pin and re-pinnned that to match RAM. You could just move the shield (BK) to the ground position ion the 12-pin.

Let me know if this doesn't make sense. Don't try the hood part numbers a few are still incorrect based on samples I received.

Hey, so i got the ford camera and wiring harness and i need some help. i get an image but the image is just bascially an outline of what it is supposed to be.

The colors of the wire are from the Ford Harness. The port numbers are on what it should be for ram 12pin.

Port 1. Brown. Power
Port 6 Black. Negative
Port 9 Green/blue. Video Signal
Port 8 purple/Gray. Shield.

I know ram also has port 10 for the return wire, but the ford camera doesn't use a return wire. Ford'a camera uses 5 wires and ram uses 4 wire. Any ideas what i am doing wrong? Should i attach the Ford shield wire to the return port on the ram 12pin?

Does the ford camera have a return wire? Maybe the 4th wire on the ford camera is the return pin and the schematic I have showing it at shield is wrong? I guess all these cameras have to have a signal and a return?

ok i got it to work, thanks Phil. For anyone that wants to use the ford camera the following is how the ram 12 pin needs to be reconfigured.

Before you had decided to go with the Ford camera setup, had you tried the RAM OEM camera first? Wondering how crappy the video was, others report it's pretty bad.

If you are asking me, no I did not create a howto for the camera. To get from the bumper connector without buying the RAM camera which is crap, I used the Ford harness HC3Z-14B242-F $130.44 included shipping (only the first piece with the mating connector.) From there, I made my own custom camera setup using a Sony module from China and a cheap rear view camera that I gutted. The signal from the camera to the truck is NTSC video (analog), so any camera that is 12v and outputs this will work. Instead of using the RAM cables I used RG6 Siamese cable. That cable is commonly used for CCTV installations in buildings. You get the RG6 coax (which is much better at sending video than the shielded twisted pair that the RAM and Ford cables use. Because you are modifying the Ford trailer connector to account for different pinouts, a bit of soldering is required because you can't get just the pins. Erich Jaeger is the OEM for Ford, and I have tried and tried to source from them. They really are playing hardball in keeping this out of the hands of competition. They have an exclusive agreement with Ford, even though the connector system has an ISO designation. RAM uses the same connector, but is made for them by another manufacturer in Mexico. You can't get that one either.
Really getting some good info in this thread for my incoming 2021 hd,
But heres a guestion, has anyone complained to ram about the poor quality camera? Or seen anything in the camera specs that could explain the poor image?

Newbie here, with a 2021 HD and all the camera/towing options except the TMPS system. Looks like I have the 12-pin plug in the bed already next to the 7-pin. Is the camera kit listed here the correct (or only?) kit to add to the camper? Looks like it has wiring for inside the truck in addition to the trailer wiring?

Also, anyone have any ideas what to do for a longer trailer? My toy hauler is sitting just shy of 45'

PN 82216066AB

Found this on eBay, and it looks like we can retrofit the 2019 with the 12 pin/7 pin connector. The only problem is I can't see paying $260+ when all I really need is the plastic mounting bracket.

Anyone have a contact at Ram that can find a part number for just the plastic mount?

Where are you going to get the 7/12-pin connector?

You haven't really described if you're going to use a different connector.

I have installed the camera prep kit and ran it to the bed for a 5th wheel setup, so I only need the plastic mounting bracket (and cut the hole bigger in the bed).

I 3D printed one that will work using the same 2 mounting holes like the 2019, but it sits vertical instead of horizontal like the 2020 stock one, and my fear is it won't be strong enough with only 2 screws.

I would like to try and keep it stock looking, so if there is an option to buy the mount from a 2020, I will go that route instead. Just looking for all my options before I start cutting on the side wall of the bed!

Nice to see something with a P/N on it for the 12 pin but it looks like they changed the shape of it. The sockets on my 20 have a curved edge backing and the 12 pin in the eBay picture has a rectangle shape.

I believe this kit is to extend the cable from the bumper hitch location to the bed. You would have to disconnect the 12 pin at the bumper and plug the rectangle connector into it, then route the cable to the bed... The other end of the cable has the 90 Deg connector just like the bumper end.

I'm not seeing a straight answer from this 4 pages... Yes or no:

Can I use 82215770AB on my 2020? or do I need the dual camera kit 82216068AB (~150+ more, and still only comes with 1 camera)

the truck already has the XFQ package so this should be plug in play, will it still need dealer programming? Taking the trailer to the metro dealer and their tiny parking lot sounds awful and its only a 20' trailer.

I have no intention of adding a 2nd trailer camera, 1 should be enough and paying the extra price tag for a spare available connector doesn't seem worthwhile to me when the 82215770AB part will suit me fine. I tried asking the dealer but they didn't seem to know anything. I'm surprised the salesman didn't try to upsell me on this considering how pricy it is.

I believe you can use the cheaper one as they both use the same connector. Seems a bit pricey for 2 extra wires for the 2nd camera.
