Okay gentlemen,

My F250 died last week and I decided to trade it in and get what I thought was a gently used 2020 Ram 2500 with a 6.7 Cummins. I purchased this truck yesterday, pretty clean inside and out, for about 50k (57k was the new price) and they are going to put $1300 worth of tires on it for me. Last night I drove 100 miles round trip and the thing was a dream, got 22 MPG highway at 75 mph. Today I am on my way to Bass Pro to get some targets and something sounds and feels wrong. I've been in a vehicle when a cylinder stops and that's what it sounds and feels like happened. Of course I take it straight to the dealership and nobody from service is in because it is Sunday. Tonight it is my homework to figure out what else could be wrong with this thing so let me give you all the info I have on this truck.

2020 Ram 2500, 4wd, Crew Cab, 6'4" bed, previous owner was Enterprise Rentals, 21k miles, the tow hitch was used and the bed shows signs of use as well. The front and rear tires did not match (Ironman's on the back, firestones on the front) leading me to think at this point that this truck may have been abused in its life as a rental.

I am trying to come up with a checklist of things that I should have the dealer look over (if they are willing to) that could also have been damaged in the past year of this trucks life and would really appreciate any advice you all could give me. This is my first diesel and I really want something that is going to last.

Checklist so far:
Axles
Locking Hubs
Engine
Differential

Is there anything else I am missing? Should I just ditch this truck as too much of an unknown? Should I wait for the service tech to look it over and tell me what's going on? I still have 80k miles of warranty.

I really appreciate any advice you all can give, this is a pretty significant investment for me and I need this truck for work (construction).

I will be at the dealership tomorrow at 11 when I can break off work to see what they have to say. I just have 3 days to figure out if I am keeping the truck and get something in writing from them about checking the parts that could have been damaged by idiots bashing on a rental. I will try to keep this thread updated with info as I get it.

Easy to wear out the factory Firestone tires in 21K towing heavy. Easier if it was towing over its rated capacities.

I doubt they were roasting the tires, torque management generally prevents much of that unless you force the traction control off.

If it was the CP4 fuel pump it wouldn't likely be running at all. Maybe it's got a stuck injector... just spitballing. If it has warranty (factory?) let the dealer handle it.

Welcome to HDRams and keep us posted.

Thanks for the reply! It will be warranty, I just got this sinking feeling in my stomach today when my shiny new (well, newest vehicle I have ever owned) truck started sputtering down the road.

If you follow V-Belt's youtube channel, his buddy had a new 3500 start missing badly at under 500 miles. It turned out to be one bad injector.

Thanks for giving me some hope! Still a bit anxious about the whole situation but feeling loads better after you and Brutal_HO chimed in.

Yea injector is the most likely problem

I would feel so uneasy, personally, I would probably bail seeing it be from enterprise. Most people don’t baby, or drive with care on a rental.

Could be something small, or just the tip of many issues. Don’t want to be that guy but I would run personally just my .02. Good luck!

And it has a CP4...

Everyone knows rentals and fleet trucks are a big no no to buy used they are driven the hardest
Like I said it's my experience. Whoever I know that rented a 2500 HD before was a responsible guy and wasn't driving it like 19 years old kid. On the other hand we all had some fun when we rented small cars ;)

I'm going to base my decision on whether or not they have diagnosed it by the time I get there. I also want to talk with them about the cp4.

Hey after enterprise screwed me around when my ram was in the body shop i made sure that rental always had warm tires lol the truck had 15k kms and the rear tires were basically bald when i brought it back i hope they charged the guy who hit me insurance for the tires too! Lol

Engine's rods are ****ed, needs a whole new engine. Dealership says they're going to get a whole new truck for me.
Wow, not a bad deal. Make sure its in writing just incase you're in a certain time frame to return the truck!
