Howdy, new 2020 Ram 2500 Laramie granite with night edition owner here. Super sexy looking truck with a not so sexy smell. Have 700 miles on it now and the last few nights with the heater on in recirculation mode from the start we start to get a coolant smell in the cab. Its so bad it's choking and have to turn it all off and open windows. What gives? Surely not a heater core issue already!?

First off recirc mode is not meant to be used in winter, any wet floorboards?

No wet floorboards. Did recirc mode after smelling it the first time trying to isolate. We drove the truck new from the dealer 600 miles away and no problem, it just recently started a day ago so I figured all burn in stuff should have burned off by now as well. So strange...

Stinky trucks suck! Lots of people with 1/2 tons have this problem but usually goes away with time. Had a 1500 Rebel and it was pretty bad for probably 6 months or about 8 K. The best guess at the time was rad hoses I think. My 12 and 19 HD diesels have been good. Not sure this helps but any smell around these trucks really get trapped in the cab.

I'd monitor the coolant tank level and watch for any leaks. As for the recirc part of this discussion, there is a good write-up in your owners manual. It can lead to inside fogging during the winter, but the truck actually monitors for that condition and may not allow recirc to be selected under certain conditions.

Just looked at the coolant tank and from the dealer it is grossly over filled! Like 3 inches above the max line. Hmmm...

Hopefully I don't have to deal with this stank for that long. It not pleasant and makes my throat sore. My 2016 1500 never had that smell.

Sounds like you discovered your problem. Possibly expanding out of the tank into the engine compartment and fumes come into the cabin.

Hi @2500driver, we certainly regret to hear about the concern you are enduring with your new truck! If you find that the smell you are experiencing does not go away on its own, feel free to reach out. We would be happy to address this further alongside your dealer if needed!

Thanks Kathryn I'll keep that in mind. I'm still getting the smell and likely will make an appointment next week.
