Crew cab rear seat mod

I have a question for those that have done the rear seat mod on their crew cab trucks where the seat backs fold down.

I have been folding my rear seat up and using the fold flat floor as a bed platform but I would like more room. I do remove my mattress and use my back seat on occasion though so I don’t want to completely remove the seat completely.
Would I be able to do the mod and fold my seat backs down to make more room without completely removing the seat? Would it support my weight like the fold flat floor does?

Here is what I’m working with now...it would be nice to get the extra shoulder room if this would fold down and not up.

Thats not going to work like you think it will you would be laying on steel hooks

I would make a wider platform base that's cut out to clear the center console and has the extra shoulder room needed.

Then get a wider foam mattress and shape it as well.

You need a Mega Cab.
I don’t disagree and am looking at that as an option for my next truck.

I might do that where my pillows are but I enjoy being able to have someplace to put my feet and sit up on the drivers side so that notch will need to stay.

I have thought about removing the entire back seat and building a platform back there. I tried sleeping in mine the way you have it set up and even at 5'9" I could not straighten out. if the back seat was completely removed I think that would do it. I thought may leaving the single seat in case needed it.

I’m 5’9” also and don’t have many problems. The memory foam is super comfortable but stretching completely out is an issue. I keep looking at building a platform to raise my mattress so it’s even with the door arm rests. I figure that will give me a couple inches on either side and make a huge difference but I like to have the rear vents blow air when the truck is running and I’d lose those so I guess everything is a compromise. Removing the back seat is definitely the best option for comfort and would open up tons of room but when I’m home I use this truck as a personal vehicle so I like being able to change it from a bed to a back seat for the kids in a couple of minutes.
I have also seen a lot of people take out the passenger seat and back seat on the passenger side and build the platform front to back. This gives tons of room to stretch out and gives you space behind the driver seat for a mini fridge and storage but still be able to remove that and fold the small jump seat down for 1 passenger when needed. That wouldn’t work for me at all though.

There are companies that make replacement door panels that are recessed to provide required dimensions for DOT approved sleeper space for people using the cabs for commercial trucking. This wouldn’t give extra width but extra length

I would need to do this if I was running with a driving partner but we have an exemption that allows us to sleep in the back and just log it as off duty instead of sleeper berth since there is only 1 driver in the truck. The kit would also make it so I couldn’t use my back seat as a back seat very easily and costs way more than I’m willing to spend. If this was a 100% work truck I’d start saving my pennies and rip the back seat out for sure though...it’s not bad like it is no more than I sleep back there, I was just wondering if there was a different way.

Link to rear seat mod who what and why?

there is a picture of it above. Basically remove the seat anc cut a bracket and then remount the seat. When you raise the lower seat cushion you can then fold the seat back down similar to the mega cabs. Guys are doing it for small hidden storage behind the seats.

DISCLAIMER: This is not legal advice and I am not a lawyer, but I would strongly caution anyone considering cutting out the panel to "hide" anything behind it consider the legal ramifications of doing so if you get searched. If they find a weapon or cash there, regardless of ownership, legality, or any number of circumstances , you could be in some serious trouble.

I originally had my bed in the back like yours. I never could get comfortable because of my head and feet being pressed against the doors. I eventually removed the back seat and the front passenger seat and built a platform and slept with my head toward the back of the truck and my feet up near the dashboard. This was much more comfortable but made my truck useless if I ever wanted to have a passenger. I eventually found that reclining the driver's seat all the way and using a pillow just below the headrest was the most comfortable way for me to sleep in the truck. I just retired from driving and ordered my retirement truck. I don't plan on ever sleeping in this one.
