Came home with a 2020 Cummins 2500 last night. I always went tall and skinny on my Jeep and Landcruisers. This being a heavy diesel, will I run into any sway if I want to maintain a smaller footprint? Say 285/75R17? Would a 315 or 12.5” offer any better stability? I don’t tow, and this is a daily and will get driven in all environments. I am more concerned with economy at this point, this is the wife’s driver and she already has a hard time getting the kiddo into the car seat. Thanks for the input.

The skinnier tire is definitely going to be more efficient on the road (vs the same tire but wider). A 285 is already over 11” wide, so I don’t think you need to worry about any stability issues with that. It’s not like you’re putting 50s on there with a 16” sidewall.

I appreciate the input. I don’t know if We really drive fast enough or tow enough to notice. Figured it was still worth asking before I get rid of these horrible transforce tires.

On my Jeeps I have run 255/80-17 (33x10.5) 285/75-17 and 35x12.5-17 and never really noticed any difference. I just put on some Toyo RT in 35x12.5-17 on my 2020 power wagon and they feel exactly the same as the stock 285/70-17 as far as going down the highway. I almost went Toyo MT in 285/75-17 but changed my mind at the last minute. I think narrower tires generally do not follow highway grooves as bad as wider ones. The Toyo 35x12.5-17 are not all that wide so if you want a little extra height go that way. If I were running 18" wheels I for sure would have went with 285/75-18 toyos. best of both worlds.

I like 285/75's, fit on a stock rim and almost 35"s tall. You may lose a mile or two mpg but they are nice and even better with a 1 3/4 or 2" level. I never noticed any added sway when I ran them on my past trucks.

Good to know. I like the smaller contact patch for the mileage. I have no idea what to expect yet. I’m stock everything except for some hot shot’s secrets ever day diesel treatment. I figure I might as well start off right (first tank fo fuel) have 50 miles on it so far.

Honestly I don’t think you’d see much of a mileage difference with the diesel. Honey badger don’t give a ...

I went 285s(35" tall) to have a little more weight on the contact patch in snow n ice. I didn't notice any changes in road handling and I corner aggressively. No noticed effects while towing around 7k#s.20200521_112005.jpg

Thanks for the picture. Nice looking setup. I don’t mean to turn this into a whole different topic but what offset are those fuel rims and do you like them?

Dumb question but what is the 4.5 Ram all about? I have a 2nd gen but all I know is this truck is new.
