Who has installed a cb?

Trying to figure out the best way to put one in. Who has installed a cb in their trucks and how did you mount it? I’m having a hard time finding the perfect place...I’ve got a Laramie with the full center console. I also have a console vault so I can’t mount it in the console or I can’t slide the cup holders up enough to open it. The side of the console on the passenger side is an option but I’m not 100% sold. Also, I don’t want it on top of the dash if I can help it.

Not a popular thing anymore. I'm in process now but some people have completed it. There are threads out there. Might expand your search to include "ham" or "amateur" as that brings in us licensed radio users.

I have an all band scanner mostly installed. Soon a dual band and then my 11m. Do you have a radio? Some offerings include mics that include a part of the radio with a portion being remote. Makes them easy to install and hide. Not AS GOOD as dual bands but helps. Look at cobra 75 wt.

If you want to push legalities off 11m and have a traditional size unit, might have to consider by your knees or on side of console.

FYI swr has been fun to achieve on my truck. I'm going to have to utilize good grounding/bonding procedure for the 11m.

Good luck!

Appreciate the heads up. I have a cobra 148GTL that I’ve owned since the 90’s I had planned on trying to squeeze in there but I just got back from the shop having it checked out and it’s time for a new one. I’ve looked at the small micro 2 piece radios like you are talking about and I just don’t think I’d be happy with the way they talk or listen. I’m afraid I’ll be going back with a full size, probably a galaxy as I’ve had good luck with those in the past also.

Dad drives truck and he's been running a galaxy for a while. Seems to be the brand of choice for real enthusiasts or wanting the best.

I installed a GMRS Midland so I can communicate with other trucks on long hauls when caravanning. I also us it to talk with wife in boat when heading down ramp to pick her up. I have easily reached out 35 miles with it. only thing is you have to have a FCC license to operate it. I mounted mine down in center conceal and there is a storage compartment in the front down low that it fits like it was made for it. I have photos of it some where here but cant recall where.

I swear I didn’t know I needEd a license occifer!

I'm pretty sure any retail GMRS radio is licensed and doesn't require an actual FCC license. GMRS/FRS share 7 of the 15 channels and are "Family" radios.

It's the Chicom radios programmed to operate on GMRS/FRS/MURS/etc that are higher than allowed wattage and unlicensed for GMRS operation.

Speaking for a friend. ;-)

No license is required for the FRS or FRS/GMRS overlap channels. But the actual GMRS channels require a license to use.

I just bought a midland 5watt gmsr and you need to be licensed. kind of a farce as no test or anything just pay the money. I will say they were quick I applied for it on the afternoon of the 15th and got it early in the morning on the 16th ie at 1:13am lol. any way $70 for 10 years so no big deal. best deal on the radio I could find was Northridge4x4 using wranglerforum in the discount code. Amazed at how small it is.

I thought if the radio has the ability to transmit over two watts you still need a license because you can transmit at a higher wattage. Per 2017 (95 ) rule.
I only got a license so I can use available radio repeaters during travel.

Correct, and I should have clarified. Most handheld bubble pack radios do not transmit over 2 watts and the radio is licensed. Anything "capable" of transmitting over 2 watts requires a license. In the end, it's best to just pay the $70 and get the paper like @jadmt did.

Well, I found almost exactly what I was looking for. The President Bill...I’m hoping I’m happy with such a small radio after using full size for so many years but it gets good reviews and is definitely the size I was looking for.

I have installed a radio on my 2020/3500, search the forms thinking interior.
Good info you will find.

How is the sound down there in the console? Is it muffled like crazy, or magnified?
I don’t have it wired up yet but I’m not expecting much especially since the radio has such a tiny speaker. I have an external speaker to mount to fix this problem, just trying to decide where to mount it.
I thought about sticking my little Radioddity GMRS... radio in there but have to think about where to put the truck gun. ;)
Mine stays on my hip...or in the console vault when I can’t have it. Lol
