Hello and good morning everyone. This weekend I tried to program an additional FOB for my truck. I had gone down to the dealer and got a 4-digit PIN code to be able to do this. But, this weekend using AlphaOBD w/KAODTECH security bypass cable, I tried to program a new FOB and II received a message telling me I was inputting an invalid code. So, I tried to do a bit of research but I am getting confused because I keep reading different things on the subject.

What I think but might be wrong about this: 4-digit PIN is for use with RF Hub and programming FOBs and 5-digit PINS are for dealer use (not a rolling/expiring code).

My questions are: Do the 4 -Digit PINS expire? Are these 4-digit PINS only for dealer use with dealer equipment or will they work with AlphaOBD and Autel MS906BT? Is the 4-digit PIN a rolling and expiring PIN and how long is the PIN good for once I get one from a parts dept. at a dealer? 72 hrs?

I am trying to program two FOBs to work with my truck, 2019 Ram Bighorn 2500. I read on some forums, that 2019+ trucks FOBs can only be programmed by dealers now? Is this true? Seems like I see some on this site using AlphaOBD successfully to program their FOBs.

Thank you for any help understanding these dealer provided PINs and how they work/using them.

According to our resident expert @Jimmy07 , you can't program FOB on the 2019+ trucks due to rolling PIN code security (it may also use OATH?) Regardless, only the dealer network using WiTech can program FOB's.

In this case, AlfaOBD is only used to enable features like remote start, etc.

Not sure what you can do with the 4 digit PIN. Maybe some of the locked out features like speed limiter?

I tried getting my local locksmith to program a new key for my truck (2019 2500) and they even ordered in a new cable etc to do the job. After about 3 hours of trying they gave up and couldn't do it. Which meant I had to buy an extra key from my local dealership and have them program it to the car, which is in line with what @Brutal/@Jimoy07 says.

I called and made an appointment. I was told it would be 30 minutes of work @ $62.00 for labor. Might turn into a different story once I am down there. Woman on the phone from service was questioning me about what I was doing. I told her I purchased a factory remote start kit and everything is ready, that I just needed the FOBs programmed at this point and I wanted to add the new FOBs to the truck, but I also want to keep the old FOBs programmed to the truck too. The tone of her response makes me think there will be confusion and extra charges once I get there. Hoping not.

Like mentioned, AlfaOBD can’t program a fob. The PIN for the rf hub is useless to you. To avoid any headaches with the dealer, just tell them you bought a fob for another spare, and want it programmed. If you tell them anything more, you’ll just raise a bunch of irrelevant questions and confusion.

With the dealers sometimes the less info the better. Just ask them to program the FOB and make sure remote start works.

Roger, good information, thanks. Will do.
