Milestar tires ignoring me. Time to go nuclear?

I bought a set of Milestar Patagonia X/T tires in 37" for my pickup about three weeks ago from Discount Tire. On the 75-mile trip home, I noticed that they were not properly balanced. Since the cost of going back to Discount Tire in terms of fuel and time was excessive, I just went to a local tire chain and had them balanced.

They told me that two of the tires were way out of round and took 11 and 18 ounces of weight to balance, but would still cause a shimmy. They said that they have seen a lot of bad tires from Milestar and that anything needing over 5 ounces of weight to balance was typically sent back to the manufacturer.

That night, I sent an email to Milestar advising them of the issue and asked what their policy was in regards to warranting a tire that was so out of round. I received no reply over two weeks later.

Today, I sent an email to Discount Tire advising them of my situation and if they could replace the two bad tires. I also sent a 2nd email to Milestar Tire advising them that they ignored my first email and if they ignore a second attempt to try and get a fair resolution, that I would then begin a campaign on social media highlighting how they produced two unsafe tires and refused to acknowledge or replace the tires.

Normally, I try to be very understanding and graceful when I experience bad service or products. But this is the third incident in which Discount Tire has mounted and balanced tires that were either improperly balanced, or so out of round that they were a hazard. Plus, me sending an email to Milestar was an attempt to give them a chance to do the right thing and replace the defective tires. They ignored my communication.

I think that I am being reasonable in wanting tires that are able to be balanced with less than five ounces of weight. I paid $322 each for tires. Two of them are defective. I just want to have the tires replaced and my cost in fuel and another tire balance compensated.

Am I being unreasonable?

In your other thread, you mentioned you ordered the tires yourself. Where did you buy them from?

I think, at most, you may get the new tires. I think it’s very unlikely they’ll compensate you for anything else. I’ve never dealt with discount tire but I’ve always seen posts from people saying they had a pleasant experience. So it seems like yours may be an outlier ‍

I’m running the same tires in a different size. Been very happy with them. My truck sits a lot and they will need a few miles to unsquare but they ride nice and traction has been good in varying conditions. I ordered off eBay and had them shipped to a local tire shop paying for install up front. It all worked out good.

Sorry for the troubles.

I haven’t known anyone that has been thrilled with their Milestar tires balance, but 11 ounces of weight to balance is next level bad.

That being said, it should have been addressed when the tires were mounted at discount tire. I wager that you’re not gonna have a lot of luck with Milestar. Did you purchase the tires through discount tire?

About 8 years ago, I had great luck with Milestar M/Ts on my trucks and my cousin's trucks. We loved 'em. But in recent times I think their quality control is slipping. I put a NEW set of Patagonia A/T Pro tires on my F-250 and didn't even make it home before noticing one of them had a sidewall bulge that looked like an internal failure.

I haven’t had good luck with Discount. Now I go to a family owned tire business.

They were ordered through the Discount Tire/Tirerack website.

UPDATE: My 2nd email to Milestar was completely ignored.

My email to Discount Tire was immediately responded to and I had the manager of the store I used calling me within 4 hours. I called him back and he was awesome. He agreed that my tires should never have been installed and were definitely defective.

He ordered me two new tires, plus a set of four new rims with the +25 offset I needed to stop the rubbing of the 37s with my leveling kit. The new rims were needed due to me going from pizza cutter 35s on zero offset rims to 37s on the same rims. The new rims and tires will be at the store on Thursday. I set an appointment for Friday to have them installed.

That means I have to take off time from work in order to drive the 72 miles to Discount Tire. I lose about $200 in wages, and $40 in fuel to get the tires replaced. The manager advised that he will make it all right in the end.

This is the quandary... When I drive the 70+ miles to Discount Tire, they are always pleasant and professional and have the best prices on tires and wheels.

But.... Every single time, they screw up the install. Every time they don't balance the tires properly or fail to get the TPMS sensors calibrated.

I am leaving on a 3200-mile road trip the day after the new wheels and tires are installed.

I think this will be my last purchase from Tire Rack/Discount Tire. The prices are great and the managers are great, but the service and quality is awful. I save about $200 up front on tire and wheel costs by going through Discount Tire and Tire Rack, but by the time you figure in fuel costs, plus the inevitable return trip to fix their mistakes and the lost wages; it makes more sense to go local. I'll gladly lower my stress levels and lost free time by just dealing with local shops.

Larger/heavier tires are more difficult to balance. Try putting the OEM tires and wheels back on. I bet your problem goes away.
