Recently had my DEF tank replaced due to crystals forming near the sensor - $1300 repair. Less than 500 miles later got the DEF System Service See Dealer and countdown from 150 miles started - just had the 125 miles notice this PM. 103K miles on my truck. Need to tow our trailer camping next week. This happened six months ago on the highway from FL-GA and DEF Regeneration came on and 100 miles later down the road no more service DEF message. So what’s the next step?

You don’t need a def tank replacement for crystallized def. What a same they ripped you off. You need to know why the code causing the message is to further diagnose.

I’d get a code reader of some sort, first and foremost.

Once you can pull the codes, you’ll have a much better idea of where the problems lie.

If the sensor was failing that would be one thing, but crystals forming near the sensor and replacing the tank is silly. A good hot water bath will clear out the crystals. Did they pull the DEF injector and check it for build up? Make sure you’re using fresh def fluid. I always look at it and make sure it looks clear before I dump it in my truck, and buy the el cheapo version, it’s all the same stuff. As mentioned above, buy yourself a code reader.

DEF Regeneration? Did you mean DPF regeneration?
