OMG the frustrating interaction with Ram Customer Care

@MegaStro Have you gone into your radio screen and selected the option to essentially dump the bags? The "ALT Height" button on the dash is NOT what you want to use for connecting the trailer.
You have to go into the radio screen to the Vehicle Settings. There are 2 different buttons that will do the same thing - 1 is called Transport Mode, the other one is something like Tire Change or Service (I forgot the specific name but will edit if I remember). That button essentially dumps the bags, but they automatically refill if you move at any speed at all. I can't remember if it's 3mph or 5mph that kicks the compressor back on.

Nobody suggested using Alt Height to lower the bed for hook/unhook. That's specific to auto-leveling the rear 1" lower than normal ride height while in motion and will continue to adjust itself.

I don't think you fully understand what each mode does. Those other modes require the truck to be running, Bed Lowering does not.

The Air suspension modes operate as follows:

• Normal Ride Height = truck will auto-level as needed
• Alternate Trailer Height = lowers 1" to a level bed, will auto-level from there as needed

The system is disabled using any of the other modes:
• Bed Lowering Mode = dumps air to lower bed. Not much on a 3500, maybe 1" if you have weight in the bed.
The following modes can only be enabled with the engine running.
• Tire Jack mode = locks air in current setting (pressure) to prevent sudden and unexpected movement.
• Transport mode = lowers (dumps) all air from bags and locks out system
• Alignment mode = locks system in normal ride height.

More often than not, people think ALT Height is the "dump all the air out" mode. And it sure sounded that way from the OP here.
