2025+ Fuel Filter Housing Air Issue

Just a heads up for those of you with 2025-2026 trucks. The current fuel filter housing has the potential to trap excessive air in it when you perform your fuel filter change. See STAR bulletin below for guidance. They’re aware of the situation so I’m pretty sure a permanent remedy for this will be pushed out at some point. IMG_4753.jpegIMG_4754.jpeg
 
Wow, someone did not think that one through.

Also, having all systems reset and the radio apps that can sometimes take up to 24 hours to return reset, for a required battery disconnect for fuel filter service is ridiculous.
This has been a known thing for a while. I fully anticipate they’re going to have some sort of remedy for this relatively soon. They’re not going to want this lingering around because it can lead to drivability issues, and that’s a red flag for NHTSA intervention. Not only that, but I can’t imagine they want the liability or reliability issues of having their techs pouring diesel fuel into the filter housing directly. Sounds like a good way to potentially contaminate a system, especially if the tech uses a dirty or otherwise previously contaminated container. Yeah the filters should catch mostly anything, but…….Murphy’s law.

I think that was the goal.
But to me, the execution was lackluster. The assembly is still in a very difficult to reach location. I haven’t had the chance to do a filter change on one yet, but I’ll be curious when my time comes if the experience is what I expect it will be.
 
It sucked. Hard to get any type of ratchet in there. Wouldn't be bad except they put a huge connector exactly where you need the ratchet. Also your arm needs to bend backwards to get to the drains on the fuel filters. The engineer that designed that must've lost his significant other to a mechanic.

In a better note, the oil filter was fairly easy.
 
Doesn't sound like fun. But since the dealer charges a stupid amount to do it, I guess I will have to.

Regarding to pouring fuel into the filter housings, make sure the fuel is clean. Newer diesel engines do not tolerate dirt in the fuel...
 
Good info here. I will be changing my FF at about 10,000 miles in my 26 Longhorn. But still need to go about 5000 miles yet. But I think I will use a different colored fuel when I change them, so I don't have to get regular colored fuel just for filling the FF canisters which will probably be only about 2 quarts.
 

Theres a better way to do it
I did the first part of this video: The part where he says to disconnect both Neg battery cables--wait 5 minutes--then reconnect the Neg battery cable on the passenger side---my 2025 did NOT make any noise of any kind---no "priming/humming" type noise under the hood. Doing this procedure did not change anything---wonder if this applies to ALL 2025's? This was supposed to make it crank faster--meaning less revolutions for the starter to turn in order for it to start. I have owned my 2025 for 6 months and have not noticed it taking any more revolutions to start than my previous 2017 Cummins..
Has anyone else performed this FIRST part of the video on your 2025? Did it make a difference in it starting?
 
I tried it but made no difference in how my truck started. For the record, my '25 starts similar to our '18 rig which is a "1-2-3-4-cough-start" which seems normal for these Cummins (and sounds like the diesels of old)....until you compare it to Ford's 6.7L which is a much healthier sounding "1-2-start".

Not sure how much sense that makes trying to explain on the interwebs....heh.
 
I just did my 10k service, these drain valves are junk, opened by hand and closed by hand. Now the back one will not seal and I am leaking fuel from that one. I think these are going to be a real pain in the ass. I do have the P2450 code obviously, between the leaking valve and the issue above with trapping air its off to the dealer I am going to have to go. This is insanity!
 
I suspect the battery disconnect recommendation is to prevent opening the door and triggering the fuel pumps inadvertently during the fuel filter change as doing so with caps removed may make one hell of a mess. I don't think it has anything to do with helping purge air from filter housing.

Shocked that purging air was never on any engineers radar. Uffaa......
