Tonneau cover opinion

i have had a Retrax for a few years now, nice solid cover, secure, keeps water out well. Overall I was happy with it. I say was because I just sold it yesterday. I have 2 complaints. The canister at the front takes up a lot of space in my short bed. The rails sat a little high and my 5th wheel would sometimes contact them in sharp turning situations. I found a great deal on a nib Bakflip MX4 so decided to give that a shot. On the plus side I bought my Retrax used and after 3 years I was able to sell it for what I paid.

I've had several different types over the years. I skipped the hard and the trifold, but have had soft roll-ups and a more rigid rollaway.

First one was a roll-up with snaps. That one was a hassle. I'd often try to avoid rolling it up if at all possible. Main problem was what it took to roll it up. I'd have to unsnap all snaps but the ones on the side closest to the cab. Remove the rear bar (part of the cover) from the frame and snap to the cover. Remove the support bars from the frame, then roll up the cover and support bars, then roll up the bars in the cover and secure with the straps at the front.

Second one was better. Soft cover was velcro secured and all supports were secured to the cover. I'd just have to release at the back and roll it up, then secure at the front. Usually not an issue except on a real hot day as the cover was hot, and often dirty.

Currently have a rigid rollaway. Canister at the front takes up a little bit of space, but it's not a big problem and is actually easy enough to remove entirely if I need to. It's a bit more secure as well as it's lined with aluminum slats the entire length. Opening it is simple. Just squeeze the release and it retracts.

I have an Xtang Revolution . Been on the truck for 5 years and is exposed to sun constantly it still looks great ! No velcro and locks tight and smooth .

I have the Extang Trifecta 2.0 soft folding tonneau. I’m satisfied with it and it has held up well so far.

One thing my truck did not come with was a tonneau cover and I would like to get one.

I found a local guy that has a new bakflip mx4 for $850. I’m not familiar with that brand and see mixed reviews on it. Should I not be cheap and get the mopar one?

Looking to get a hard trifold if that matters.
I love my Bakflip

I have the Bak-flip MX4 and absolutely love it. Easy to install myself and I have no issues hauling furniture pieces and other big items. Great quality cover that was worth paying more for. No regrets here!

I totally agree, Its perfect for the 5th wheel with my 8 ft. box. Lots of room when hooked up and a weather resistant and a fairly secure box the rest of the time.

Just installed my mx4 and I'm thrilled. Took 20 min to install fits great easy to open and close. So far I like it better than the retrax. It's really easy to remove with 2 wing nuts if I want it out but folds all the way against the rear window for full bed access. Latches seem secure and the rails are flush.

Been looking for a tri-fold cover for my 2026 with cargo boxes which is about to be built. Looking to hear from anyone else here and what direction you went. I currently have a tri-fold vinyl on my 1500 limited with the cargo boxes and really like this cover and would like to get the same type of cover. This was direct from Ram and on the truck when I bought the truck back in 22. Any info would be appreciated.

I friend who owns a 2500 showed me his tonneau cover and I liked it. He said it was holding up really good so I got one from Amazon.

Photo of my truck with it. I’ve had a Gator cover before and this one seems just as good if not better. Paid $150 on sale. Right now $136 for Cyber Monday.

I have the same style from Tyger Auto. I know they're Chinese made, but they work great. I've had them on my last three trucks.

I have a lomax tonneau cover...tri-fold diamond plate. This one does NOT stand up on the third section which I wanted. It's pretty easy to remove the cover, which I do regularly, my only complaint is that I probably would've gotten the FRP instead of the aluminum. I think it would've been a bit lighter and just a bit easier to move around compared to the aluminum.

I second the Gator. I've had them on prob 4 trucks now, 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton and no issues. I drove in the some gusts yesterday and even though it had a slight wave, the edges were secure. And for approx $220 on Realtruck, that's a pretty good price for a secured latch, roll up tonneau. They do have a nice metal roll up for under $900 as well.

Amazon checker says this does not fit 2026 3500. Could they be wrong? How old is your friend’s truck. Amazon says it fits my 2017 3500.
