Towing with new 6.4L

"frontal mass of the camper and speed" are the main things I noticed. My last TT was a 29 foot Aspen Trail with a standard suspension. It was around 7K loaded 900 lbs tongue weight. I got the same mpg's with it as the new trailer a 30 foot Rockwood ultra lite I have noticed this year. I did put a road armor suspension on the Aspen Trail and it helped the driving characteristics, but the Rockwood has a torsion axle suspension and the smoothness and ride characteristics are much better out of the box.

So, I am pulling more weight, but definitely the mpg's are very close to the same... Not sure if the suspension is part of the equation or not. I have less sway and it tracks like it is connected now. Same tires as in Good Year Endurance.

One factoid I noticed was that I had aftermarket Endurances on my old trailer while the new one has OEM versions. I had a season and a half (8Kish miles) under my belt on the Discount Tire endurance's and they still had more tread on them than the new OEM's on the new Trailer. I thought that was interesting... I guess that's one way to cut costs is to reduce tread on OEM trailer tires vs after market. I'd say a good 10K year of life is about the difference for me as the driving consumer. AND, they put a China Bomb "Castle Rock" on as my spare tire... I guess the dealer could have done that, but didn't look like it.
That’s what I thought. I’ll report back when I get a few trips on the new TT. We are towing the old TT to Phoenix as a trade for the new Ember. We are staying at a resort in Tucson and picking the new camper the day we check out. In the way back we are planning on spending the night halfway home.

Thats great info, how does the truck handle when not towing? I expected the 2500HD would be a bit of a rougher ride and since mine is now my daily vehicle I have been wondering if this would help with not only the bounce but the daily commute?
The Bilstein shocks made the biggest day to day difference; improved ride but not harshly. The SumoSprings don’t come into effect until there’s a load on the bed/trailer on the ball. The two together eliminated the porposing over bridge joints or big potholes.

Bilstein shocks made a noticable difference? approximate costs, please describe the difference?

My wife and I are heading out tomorrow morning to Komiefornia to visit two new great grandbabies. First time towing our 26' travel trailer. The gvwr is 5,500lbs and I know we will be all of that and a little more. I finally get to see if I made a good decision to move to my new to me 2024 2500 6.4 with the 3.73 gears. There will be pictures to follow.

It will tow great. Have a nice trip. Pics.

Your truck will do fine. Enjoy your trip.

More than enough truck. Be careful you don't forget it's back there.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I paid $383 in March of 2023 for the Bilstein 4600 shocks and installed them myself. The ride is firmer and there’s less rebounds over bumps and potholes. It also feels more planted, that’s a combination of both the shocks and SumoSprings.

Headed out Saturday morning, first stop is Fort Mohave visiting a old friend. 20251108_071307.jpgtook the puppies for a ride and found a gravel leve road along the Colorado River to walk them a little 20251108_071307.jpg20251110_104814.jpg20251110_104849.jpg

Toted the crawler to Alabama. Was a beautiful Saturday.
~8k trailer.

On the way out I was running late for meeting my buddies so I was running 75-80mph and got ~9.5mpg. On the way back I was more relaxed around 65mph and got around 10.5.

I’ve never felt like I needed more truck for my load but if I was pulling 10k or pulling everyday I may feel differently

Nice

What axle gears do you have?

Agree on that. We kid around about the diesel/gas decision, but I did certainly enjoy all my diesel trucks. I tow about 8k quite often for work, between 40 and 120 mile round trips. My truck handles it easily and I find towing with this truck to be such an enjoyable thing, so much less attention is needed compared to some older trucks. But, add a bit more weight (for me it would be more like 12k I think) and if towing regularly I'd go diesel for sure.

I'm very impressed with my 6.4 Driving the I-40 through the Komifornia desert was very easy. I think temperature gage hit 219 at one point. It's handling our 5,500lb travel trailer like a champ.
Of course it did, it was manufactured by socialists in Mexico. :D

I would peg the ZF over the prior Vat of Lead transmission about 5% more peppy, 10% better down grade shifting( however over the top for empty trailers it seems), and 15% better climbing steep grades. At low speeds the transmission really is slow to shift to avoid the near stalling I used to see. Another factor is torque steer and jerking when you down shift up hill, on turns or bad roads. Now it is so smooth it really eliminates that issue. Mine is a PW with 4:10s so far 11K is as much as I have towed with the new one.
