Weights - stuff “below” axle count?

I’m curious if any experts know - when counting up weights to get totals - can things like the weight of the tires & wheels be subtracted? If GVWR is 10,000 lbs and tires + wheels weigh 400 lbs, can you go to 10,400 as it reads on a CAT scale? I’m thinking the GVWR - or more likely the GAWRs - are based on the bearings and frame anchor points to the suspensions. If true, wouldn’t everything “below” that carry its own weight?

As far as I am aware you can't deduct wheels and add that as potential. Also if I'm not mistaken, so much is added to your vehicle weight to accommodate for persons and fuel. Maybe Im just misunderstanding your question. I know I'm a DA but it kind of sounds like your asking, if I get pulled over and am over weight by 400lbs can I convince the trooper to allow me to take off wheels. Wich is a good one. I'd tell him hold on while I drain 100 gal of fuel on the ground. You got me laughing now, please clarify for this DA.

Sorry, you have not cracked the code. You weigh, what you weigh

That reminds me of when I was hauling garbage and we weren't allowed to go over gvwr per the company rules. When ever I would cross the landfill scale and be over by a hair, I'd be throwing everything out the cab and toolbox, chains, spill kits soaked in hyd oil, fire extinguishers, straps and bars, shovel all the slop out, and my dinner sack. Everybody would laugh there a$$=$ off but I stayed out of trouble and kept my safety bonus. Lol hahaha :p  ahhh the good ole days

This is less a “what would the trooper say” question and more pointed at the finer points of the engineering. “Suspended weight” comes to mind... is 10,000 the limit of the axles? Cause those GAWR added together are well over 10,000. Is it the brakes? Cause just adding a 3,000 trailer without trailer brakes makes that moot. Is it the suspension? If so, then anything “under” the suspension can be removed. Is it a nice round number that RAM decided was easy to remember?

this is funny. I guess I could lead turn this one with a “Officer, what’s gonna be cheaper? An over-weight fine, or an environmental hazard fine?”

These are not just static loads, so there's that to take into consideration.

Here in Iowa, we are allowed an overage of a small amount, if memory serves correctly it comes out in that 400-500lb category. Nowadays, with the bs licensing by value and weight, we pay enough every year, they ought to refund us for being UNDER weight! I will never admit, but Rich can attest to this, with the current setup I have(handles it well), I just motor on by and cross me fingers..We all know they just put these 2500’s in this class to sell trucks to more people. Half rarely pull anything bigger than a fishin boat. I am at 24440 overall, pin weight-shhhhhhhh!

Gass on it and don't look in the rear view. :p I've mostly read that most states will allow 500-1000 lbs over load before they enforce but 1 rookie cop can debunk all that. Weights set by manufacturer can't be changed ( with out going over the river and through the woods, over the rainbow and an act of Congress with a few senators in your back pocket). Front axle 6000, rear axle 9750, yes that's 15,750 lbs and gvwr is set at 14k, so 1750 difference. Most of the time these values are set on the weakest link of the puzzle, wich is obviously not the axles. Lots of times the manufacture is safe guarding themselves so to not max out all parts and pieces to the brink of maximum specs and possible failure. 43k is a pretty hefty gcwr number to work with and I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate not many of us will probably reach to have to worry about removing items , (ie wheels) to stay under weight. I would have to say that in my personnel 25 yr experience with dot and there inspections that they will allow you to shift weight around and or permanently remove items to be picked up by someone else, for the most part, most of them will work with you , but there not going to let you speculate about removing necessary parts from your vehicle or trailer to hypothetically reduce your weight to be legal or gain you capacity, with out laughing there @$$=$ off at you anyway snd then putting a lock on it.
