I have a 2019 Ram 2500 (Laramie) with auto release tailgate (button inside truck and on key fob). When I hit either button I can hear the tailgate latch release, but the tailgate doesn't slowly go down, in fact it doesn't move at all. Also, when I go to close it, there is really loud banging noise on the right (passenger) side of the tailgate. I assume that all of this isn't normal? That it is supposed to release and lower down and then when I close it shouldn't be as loud as it is.

Apologies if this has been discussed before, I searched and couldn't find anything.

Hi @Tell3131 - We certainly understand why this would be concerning. If you wouldn't mind following up with us via private message to provide your VIN, I would be happy to look into this on my end to see what I can see to determine how to best assist at this point.

It's broken. Take it to your dealer and have them fix it.

Agree with Phil T, mine doesn't make any noise at all, going up or down.

Wonder if that piston is disconnected somehow. It's on the passenger side and is what gives it a soft opening. I just installed one a few months ago

Mine does it occasionally, but most of the time it works as advertised. I'll be interested as to what @Tell3131 finds out from the service department.

Appointment today at 9:30AM CT. Will let you know here what the outcome is. I noticed it when I first bought it but figured I was doing something wrong, but it has never really worked right, so we will see what they say.

Went to the dealer. When I got there I tested out the automatic tailgate drop from the remote and while the tailgate released (barely) it didn't open up. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't working as before. After sitting in waiting room a bit, they called me back because they didn't understand the issue. I showed them that it didn't release with the button and they tried to convince me that it wasn't supposed to drop on its own, just unlock. I explained to them that they were wrong and how it should work and that when I went to push the tailgate to close it was very hard to close and a loud bang. They said ok finally, so I waited some more. They came back and said it was an alignment issue with the tailgate and it wasn't catching/releasing properly. THey said that the body shop would have to work on it as they were not able to. Only problem is body shop portion is closed till at least May 1. So I have to take it to their sister store if I want to get it fixed before May 1.

Long story short it isn't fixed, but know what the issue is. Just need to schedule appointment at other dealer to get it fixed.

Mine was sticky when I first got it but after about 10 or 15 tries it worked fine until I put a box cover on. Now I don't expect it to flip down due to the box cover seal.

I was the same way when I first got mine, thought it might just need to be used more, but it didn't ever get any better, in fact the opposite, it got worse. No cover on mine, but if I did, then like you I wouldn't think it would work.

That sucks. I guess the knobs at the dealership thought you only bought the self unlocking model  . Every employee should be sat down like 3rd graders and forced to read the brochures and the manuals! Not that that reading material is 100% correct but it would be a start. There was lots of talk on the 1500 forum of the tailgates not dropping with the electronic push and the fix was to slam it shut the first 10 or 20 times and it worked for most. But it’s kind of hard to do that when it makes bad noises. Mine worked first try even with my cover.

Can I buy that strut for my 2020 ram 2500?
