Off road "Power Steering" is the weakest link.*

OK, I can't believe that I am the only person that has a problem with this electric power steering system. With the design and engineering effort they put into making the Power Wagon the truly capable, feature rich, behemoth that it is, I would have to say they really missed the bus on this steering. When you get in trouble and are either sinking in mud, or wheel stuck between two rocks, this system(unlike EVERY analog steering system ever!), this power steering Absolutely just stops. Anyone who is not new to the off road world, knows the steering is a very valuable tool for self recovery. This heavy truck should have a power steering pump that can free lift the entire 8,000 lb weight of the truck. Spoiler alert!: it doesn't.*

My entire power steering system just self destructed. (In a parking lot, not out in the wild) According to the tech at the dealership: "The steering pump blew up, and that sent metal debris through the rest of the system". On a positive note, it is covered under warranty. On the not so good side, it will be almost 3 weeks until the back ordered components come in, they are only covering 10 days with a loaner vehicle, and the $50 a day they authorized, isn't enough to pay for a truck. That is only enough to get a sedan or foreign suv. That isnt going to get the bike to the track, the garbage to the dump, or any other reason that I specifically bought a truck for.

$1500 a month to drive a Kia Sorento? Um, I will stop ranting now. Love my truck, but this is incredibly frustrating.

If anyone is still reading, thanks for your time. Unfortunately, you will never get it back, and for that I am sorry!✌️

*in hind sight: it is possible that my eps had always been defective, and therefore the weakness isn't atypical. We shall see after the replacement.20241006_124259.jpg

With the trail/off-road focus put into making this truck great again, I would have to say they really missed the bus on this steering. Anyone who is not new to the off road world, the steering is one of your most overlooked tools for self recovery. And this heavy truck should have a power steering pump that can free lift the entire 8,000 lb weight of the truck. Spoiler alert!: it doesn't, it cant, and it never will.

I dont find the steering lacking at all on my 19, perhaps you have something wrong or should look into hydro assist

Your monthly payment is $1500? Ouch
I wanted to pay it off in 4 years. No one likes paying for a vehicle that isnt covered under warranty. Plus, I happened to buy when prices were at their very peak (that's on me, I just couldn't wait any to get my hands on one!). Demand was high and ALL the dealers were selling above msrp. After all the fees and taxes were paid, it was more then I paid for my house. Of course, that was 30 years ago, and it has been paid off for 10 years. Different times.

Out of curiosity (since I haven't been wheeling in anyone else's gen4+ Ram). In your experience, you have not been in heavy deep mud or between two boulders etc, and told the truck you wanted to turn. But it refuses to respond at all. No matter how hard you pull on the wheel? If that is the case, I'll withdraw this thread, and chalk it up to a bad eps unit. Im looking for thoughts on the matter, either way. Thanks.

Why do you think a HD Ram has electric power-steering system (EPS)? I think it’s just the Ram 1500s that have EPS.

My HDs has the older power steering system with a belt driven power steering pump. Are the Power Wagons (PW) different than non PW HDs?

They must be different on pw's. No belt, and two 4 gauge cables running to the unit that is attatched to the steering box. Maybe that is a contributing factor in their reduced towing capacity. I know the lane keep assist module would have power cables too, but I think it's on the steering column. Idk for sure.

You have Hydraulic steering with a torque overlay on the stering box for lane assist its not EPS. The only time I have an issue steering which is just a bit extra effort is with my 1000lbs V plow on the truck and turning on dry pavement never an issue any other time and i dont have the lane assist so no torque overlay for me. If you are having trouble you need hydro assist added in. You don’t want the factory steering to have that much power as you will bend the steering linkages. Aftermarket steering arms and hydro assist will do everything you want.
