Morning!

Wanted to get some input on from you guys on the the 3500 with the 6.4 Hemi. I’m coming from a 2020 Rebel Eco with 3.93 gears. I’ve just outgrown the truck in regards to payload demands. I don’t tow enough to warrant the added cost the Cummins entails.

How are you all liking the 6.4 for overall day today/reliability. I test drove a 2025 Big Horn 3500 yesterday and was quite impressed.its equipped with Night Edition and the Level 2 plus. With factory discounts and negotiation I got them at 82,327CAD with running boards, flaps and leveling kit.

Here’s a pic of the build.

Gas mileage will be about 11/12 MPG
I live out in rural Canada. Most of my driving is highway, surely the fuel economy will be a bit better than that? Regardless I’m not purchasing it for fuel economy. My eco with the rebel lift and 3.93 gears was about 10l/100 which was approx. 20mpg I believe?

My Rebel averaged about 17 MPG

That’s good. But overall are yall happy with the capabilities of the 6.4L

Skinny pedal application rate changes 6.4 mpg a bunch. I drive mine easy and I can get 18 mpg on highway trips and my rural commute is about 15 mpg or 16 mpg if I am careful.

I have 4.10 gears and my MDS kicks in often on the highway which I think helps my mpg.

If I hook a trailer up and it goes down.

I am happy with mine.

Nice good to know. I was impressed when I test drove it.

I've only had my 2500 6.4 with 4.10's for a little over two months, but so far I like it a lot. I opted for the Hemi instead of the Cummins because my commute is 12 miles, and the gym and various stores we go to are less than 5 miles away. For the few times per year we'll be towing something (travel trailer under 30', car trailer), the maintenance hassle of a diesel with such low mile trips would have been a nightmare and the added tow capacity would never have been used.

If we move to a piece of property outside of a town and it takes longer to get places, I might consider a diesel in the next truck, but even then I still might not unless we're also seriously thinking of upgrading to a bigger travel trailer or enclosed car trailer... and even then I would probably want to get some cheap going-to-town car instead of dailying a diesel HD.

My commute averages about 40-45mph and zigzags around various lakes, so I stop and go at least every 0.5-1 miles. Averaging 11.2 MPG. Cruise control at 70 for about 15 miles nets over 18 MPG, which is better than the lifted Jeep I traded for the truck. I'm happy. I expect when towing to get 9-10.

I have a PW, so less weight. 4.10 gears on 35s.
I've found that once you go over 70 MPH, MPG goes down and pretty much stays there from 70+ up to 97 MPH.

Best MPG i ever got was 17, but I was doing about 50 MPH on the highway.

Your Mileage may vary.

I'm happy with my 2025 Ram 3500 with the 6.4L. I have a Dusky 252 center console and no issues towing.

Good to hear. Will be nice this fall getting 5 cords of firewood in 1/3 as many trips to the bush . The half tons drive nice but they payload and my rebels 5”5 box sucked!!!!

Less weight? Less weight than what? A PW is probably heavier than a comparably equipped gas Laramie since it has more skid plates, the winch, etc.

@Op I also have a PW with 4.10s and 35” tires. I get about 12.5mpg on average mixed driving; I think like 15.5mpg was my high score on a road trip. City driving will tank the mpg. I don’t really tow, but I like the Hemi. It’s smooth and torquey, does fine on steep mountain pass roads; though it’s not going to win any races. It’s a proven motor, it’s been in the HDs for over 10 years now. The ZF 8 speed on it is crisp and quick shifting, doesn’t hesitate to downshift but doesn’t gear hunt.

Thank you all for chiming in regarding your experiences with the 6.4. I’m in the market for a 3500 SRW for carrying my camper. I don’t need the power of the diesel,(but I have enjoyed the last 20 years with this one), just the payload for a 3500lb load.

Waiting on silver, so it might be a 2026. Early reports on the 2025 diesel emissions are encouraging so I could still be swayed.
Thanks again.

Appreciate all the input guys. I think I’m gunna bite the bullet. I test drove the 7.3 Godzilla today. Sure liked the power, but hated the interior and I’ve heard so many questionable things about the 10 speed. Like you said the 6.4 has been around long enough with a decent track record. Anything I can do to help prevent lifter issues aside from low idle time?

We own both a Ram 2500 4x4 Tradesman Power Wagon with 4.10-1 and a Ram 3500 4x4 Tradesman 6.7L with 3.73-1. At our high elevation local driving (10,500 feet) the turbo diesel is a rocket versus the gas. No comparison.

Keeping the idling down is key but I’d also recommend not doing long oil change intervals. I wouldn’t go more than 7k miles, less if you have mostly short trips.

Opinions will vary on OCI ;)
