Hello! I've been towing with my new 2500 for about 8 months now and couldn't be happier overall. One thing I've noticed about this truck compared to my older GMCs is these Rams love to run pretty warm. The oil and coolant both usually stay pretty close to each other and float between 215 - 225 degrees F. However, last week I put her in a worst-case scenario: towing uphill, into a strong headwind, outside temp in the low 90s. Coolant stayed around 225F but the oil temp peaked at 245. Once I topped the hill, both coolant and oil settled back down to 215 after about 15 minutes. Trans was 180 consistently all day.

My older GMCs, 6.0 gas, had actual dedicated oil coolers: a whole separate radiator up front for the engine oil to use. However, these trucks appear to have a heat exchanger, rather than a radiator up front.

There was no overtemp warning and since it did eventually cool off, I don't suspect this is outside the tolerance of the Ram. However, that still seems pretty high to me, especially considering the old trucks almost never went over 215F. Are these temps normal? I'm more wondering about longevity rather than throwing a rod on the highway. I do change the oil with PuP 0w40 religiously every 3k miles. Has anyone installed an aftermarket oil cooler to keep temps down? Or am I just overthinking it? Most of my trailers + load weight are under 11k lbs total

Those are normal temps. The PUP can take that temp and the engine was designed to run like that. I've pulled 10,000 lbs up a pretty steep grade for about 10 miles at 60 mph in about 50 degree weather. The oil temp climbed to 250 but the coolant stayed put. In fact, i think the coolant went down a bit. I think that was a sign the grill shutters opened to allow more air to flow through the exchangers. Once we got to the top, a couple mins and the oil temp was back to normal. My transmission holds at 168-170 pulling that load all day no matter what.

Pulling this I saw these temps.

245 is fine. The oil has to be hotter to hand the heat off to the coolant. If your coolant is 225, oil will be hotter.

Does the 6.4 have an actual oil temp sensor, or is it simulated/calculated/modeled like on the diesel?

Does the 6.4 have piston cooling jets?

Just out of my interest, is the oil temp sensor in the sump, galley pre cooler, or post cooler?
I'm not sure where it lies in the flow path, but it's just above the oil filter.
