I have 2024 RAM Laramie CREW CAB 4X4 with a 6.4 Heavy Duty HEMI and an 8HP75-LCV transmission with 2,500 miles on it. I love the truck in all respects (used to have an '03 with a Cummings) and the transmission in new rig is reluctant to get into 8th gear (need to be going +65 on a flat grade) and it drops to 7 with any grade increase on the interstate and/or when I drop below 65 regardless of whether I am going downhill or on a flat road. Frankly, that doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever. The '03 Cummings would lug like a bear (albeit with a different automatic transmission) but this one is more like an anemic deer.

Question: can the transmission code be read and adjusted by the dealership to make it "lug" even a little - right now it won't despite having a terrific motor, new tires, etc.? Is it possible the code is incorrect and needs to wiped clean and rebooted? (like you would do a home computer) I so, could a typical dealership service tech handle this?

I don't want to operate the truck outside of the manufacturer's design specs and I am hoping someone could offer some advice please. I have an appointment next week and I'd like to go in there a little better educated.

Thank you.

Thats pretty normal 7-8 are both overdrives im guessing you have 3.73 gearing? You cant compare a low RPM tq or a cummins to a gas V8

You are correct on the gearing, and I understand it isn't designed to operate like the Cummings but..... I would hope (perhaps unreasonably) that it could accept operating in a higher gear until it started to load up a bit- this one has a small "bit". In the good old days, transmissions would shift up going downhill until you asked them to work a little - seems like those days are over?

Thanks!

Cummins... not Cummings

Your truck is operating as designed and programmed. A few years back the parameters to get into 8th gear seems to shift a little and the trucks with 3.73's take more speed to get into 8th. At least 7th is a overdrive too.

I noticed the same thing on a Jeep Wrangler rental with 3.45's compared to the wife's JT with 4.10;'s.

what gear ration do you have?

Same rig except a 2021. Sounds like it is shifting as designed, with the 3.73’s. Depending on how long you’ve had it you will eventually ignore that and a few other quirks. MDS can be annoying depending on your travels. I shut that off pretty often via tow/haul.

It's a 3.73 axle ratio and I am guessing it is operating as designed and I'll get used to it. I also expect it will stay in 8 if I'm traveling an interstate and stay above 65 - I haven't yet. Thanks
