Got my backup camera to stay on consistently! 2021 Ram 2500

Hey everyone, I have. 2021 Ram 2500 CD Tradesman with the Jimmy07, 12.1 conversion wiring harness. So I have a small utility trailer that is too small to see in my mirrors. I tried to get my backup camera to stay on while I’m towing the small trailer and it worked! The problem is I don’t know how I did it!

I was driving down the street and every time I manually activated the reverse camera it would shut off after a few seconds or shut off once I got up to speed. I was playing with it while going forward at about 45 mph and all of the sudden I got it to stay on, even through a few stop light cycles! The rear camera stayed on for 10 minutes, until I stopped and cycled the key!

Has anyone figured out how to keep the rear camera on? I hit the “X” button on the upper right side of the screen and kept turning the camera on and off and then it stayed on!

I keep trying different combinations but can’t seem to duplicate keeping the camera on, however I believe it can be done and I just have to find the right combination of buttons! I figure that if I post this, we can all figure it out! I did it once!

Afterwards, I saw a post on the Ram Powermaster Van that said to hit the “X” and count 10-12 Mississippi and it would work, NOT!

It worked once, so let’s figure this out together! Thanks

That would be a glitch i doubt you could actively replicate it when needed

Yep...mine does that too. I pull my trash can 1/4 mile to the road and back once a week. I just lean the can back and drop the handle over the hitch ball and drive slow. I try to keep the rear camera on because sometimes, if I hit a bump or rock, the empty can bounces off of the hitch. About every 10th time or so the camera will stay on until I hit the X....or the Home button...or park the truck. Don't know why but it does.

That’s pretty negative, I’ll tell you what if I figure it out I’ll keep it to myself.

I think you are reading into his response to much. He's stating what you experienced is not normal operation and its probably a software glitch.

The only camera I have turned on while driving was the cargo bed camera. Unfortunately, it did not remain on for very long, let us know if you find a way to keep it on. I would love to be able to leave it on when I have the bed loaded.

Well, I think you guys are wrong. I got it to stay on consistently whenever I want. Is anyone else interested in the solution? If so, I’ll post it if not, carry-on boys, and girls.

I am interested in hearing how you got it to stay on, please share.

Yeh, come on....give please. I'm tired of getting to the house and finding my trash can 100 yds. back down the driveway.

Ok here it is and it’s very simple and consistent. First you have to have the backup camera button on your radio…sorry you 5” screen owners. I have the 12.1” screen conversion thanks to Jimmy. So far this only works on 12.1 Enjoy!

It’s very simple although these instructions will seem like over kill (it’s kind of like writing instructions on how to tie a shoe lace…easy to do and hard to explain!) so bear with me!

So while you are driving (it doesn’t work while at a stop because the backup camera already stays on while stopped, when you activate it) press the backup camera icon button. The camera is programmed to only stay on for around 10 seconds, then it shuts off. During those 10 or so seconds, I continuously tap the camera icon/switch. At about 10 seconds that switch icon will change to a black square, just before it shuts off the camera, but if you are tapping it at that exact moment, the icon will go back to being a camera icon and from that point on the backup camera will stay on! The camera will stay on as long as you are going over about 5 mph! This means that you can view your trailer while driving, even if you are traveling a hundred miles or more! Once you slow to a stop, it resets and you will have to tap it again to re activate the camera. I use it all the time when I trailer, or just sometimes to see people driving behind me.

If you know exactly how long the camera icon stays on before turning the camera off, theoretically you could just press that icon twice. Once to activate it and once as soon as it turns black, right before it switches off. I’ve tried counting and trying to time it exactly but it’s hard to do! But it can be done!!

The easy method is just what I posted above! I just turn the backup camera on then keep tapping it until it tries to switch off and then it stays on! It may take some practice but once you know this secret, despite the Naysayers, you can keep your Backup Camera ON!

If anyone comes up with a better hack, please post it but I have been using this method for over a year!

This is an awesome forum and NO, I wasn’t going to keep it to myself, I’ve just been busy! Happy trailering!

Which camera icon? Adding one to the toolbar at the bottom or the ones that appears when you select the rear camera and in the top left you have a number of buttons to select the various cameras?

I have a 2021 ram 2500 that I added the 12.1 inch screen and the camera icon is the backup camera icon that appears in the lower right corner (from my memory) once you activate that, then the backup camera appears and in the middle of the screen is the backup camera icon again. That is the one that you tap on. That icon is visible when you can see the backup camera activated. Hope this helps, if not I will go try it and report back.
