New 35s squirmy

2015 ram 2500 4wd. 2.5” level. Just put new 35/12.50/20 nitto ridge graps on. Running stock 20x8 chrome wheels. Even with tire pressure set at oe spec the truck drives like crap. All over the road just very squirmy. Feels loose like driving on ice. Feels like ass end is trying to come around.

Is that normal for 35/12.50?

Should I have gone 35/11.50 or 295/65/20 or 285/65/20?

And don’t say “buy wider wheels.” I don’t want wider wheels.

Thats a common complaint with those tires they usually “break in” within 500miles. Ps OE tire spec is too much with oversize tires.

I’m already at 700+ miles and still squirmy. I’ve tried as low as 40 psi in them. I just can’t get them right.

I would go see about warranty on them as they should have settled down by now. Im not a fan of NITTO tires they are pricey and troublesome in my experience.

That’s the plan. Try to swap them for 285/65/20

12 ply on the sidewall (Load Range F) versus OEM Load Range E. So they shouldn't be that way. Our 2016 Ram 2500 4x4 Tradesman PW handles on the Toyo 35 12.50R17 Load Range E much better than the OEM Goodyear 285 70R17 Load Range D which got much more squirrelly with their age. Had to get rid of them due to that. Haven't had that issue unless it's loaded over the maximum payload with the 35's.

Hello ! The 12.50 is approved for an 8.5 to 11 inch wheel width. So essentially you’re squeezing the beads of the tire together more to fit on the 8 inch width. In doing this it effects the contact patch of the tire to the street and also puts added stress to the steel belts on the edges of the tire and could cause belt separation The 11.50 would a better set up on your wheel. I believe Nitto has a 30 day ride guaranteed. Take them back and swap them to 11.50. I run the same tires and love ‘em!

If your truck is a diesel then 45/30 is sufficient air for an empty truck with those tires. They should have settled by 500 miles, but could take longer. I would definitely swing by the tire store and talk with them.

The Load Range really doesn’t mean too much being F. They are F because LRE tires in that size Your 17” tires aren’t LRF because the TRA limited 17’s to 3195lbs, and that’s obtained at 65 psi so LRE is sufficient. (Flotation sizes of 12.5” wide or wider. The same thing is common metric size that are 305 or wider)on are only rated for 65 psi cold.

The Discount Tire website lists 64 tires in the 35 12.50R20 flotatation size. 30 tires options are Load Range E and 34 are Load Range F. There are many name brand tires listed such as the BFG A/T KO2 listed with a Load Range E having a lower Load Index with a lower maximum load capacity in pounds and a lower maximum cold PSI than the truck's OEM specifications. This is why I mentioned it.

It still doesn’t mean too much relative to the OP’s issue. D, E, or F is sufficient tire to not have squirm from load range on an empty truck. They all 3 use the same psi for the same weight that the OP is at empty.

Loaded to capacity the F’s are nice because they hold 80 psi vs the 65 psi for E’s but that’s immaterial at his weights.
