My Ram (29k miles) 6.4 ltr is under warranty luckily and I had an intermittant louder then normal noise at very cold temps in michigan that would go away. I tried different filters and all of the things possible only to take it to dealer and find out it was lifter issue. So I say take a video of the noise if you can and leave it with dealer if under warranty as soon as possible. I am frustrated with dealer while waiting as they can not give me ETA or confirm if the cam was replaced. Hell your lucky if you can get thru on phone. Yesterday I waited on line and with my impatience hung up. This was after several emails all the way up the food chain in the dealership. BTW you need an appointment which can be like almost a month out to even get in. then when you get in they pre-wearn you it may be 5 to 7 days before a "tech" even looks at it! Very curious to root cause and now thinking Ford Superduty with 7.3 better gasser and MDS is probably pending long term durability issue but if you remove it warranty is voided and needs a retune. Bet yous booty I will get this done after warranty if I dont just get the Ford and be done with it. I blame the government for CAFE fleet MPG requirements that they added the stupid MDS crap.

I believe the issue is an oiling issue, more then lifter design or MDS. At idle the lifters are starved for oil, and of course cold weather makes it worse. At 22 below in January it sounded like my engine was going to explode! It did not, but the mixing door for the heater did. Really hoping my engine holds together until Ram releases paint for trucks again.

Mine sounds like its 100 yrs old once its colder than 32F. Melling performance has a high volume oil pump available that does better than the hellcat oil pump even. From watching videos from an ex FCA tech explaining how the MDS system works, the lifters seem to have a better chance of getting oiled under the MDS condition. This is because, ironically, there is an oil gallery running down the middle under the cam that could block splash up from the pan. I believe I have those locations correct, anyway the guys channel is ReignitedAuto on YouTube, he has lots of Hemi videos for multiple generations of Hemis.

Mine sounds like its 100 years old all the time. Its been as loud as engine about to blow at times. Thing is, its still alive after maybe 20,000 miles driving it like that. Who knows how long it will last I guess. Really hoping for a new engine option next year.

Yes the solenoids are "normally closed" which means no oil. When it goes into MDS then they open and high pressure oil enters the special MDS lifter closing the intake valve. So in theory eliminating the solenoid opens the lifters up to oil and the spcial MDS lifter would be replaced with normal lifter. More oil to lifters is always better. Ram has part numbers released for solenoid block off plates but what needs to be reprogrammed is the question to prevent light or solenoid error.

If I have to drop a new engine in, and probably will these are some great upgrades to make the next one a bit more solid. Good stuff!
