Hit 2800 miles last week on the 2024 Ram 2500 6.4 I bought new in September 2024. I don’t drive it much, obviously. My first oil change was at 500 miles for break in. When I checked the oil last week it was low. Put in exactly 1/2 quart of 0w-40 and it brought it back to just a hair below the full mark. Never had a new vehicle use oil like that. Does anyone think this is excessive?

This seems to be something that can vary from truck to truck. Given you are still essentially breaking it in, I wouldn't sweat it just yet. Just keep an eye on it.

I've also found the 6.4 seems to take a bit to draining down the oil. Checking it at the gas station seems to get me a different reading then getting home and waiting 10-15 minutes to pull the dipstick.

I always check the oil after it sits for an hour. Just like it says in the owners manual. We’ll see.

Did you change the oil? Or someone else? Just curious- it’s possible when the oil was changed it was not filled properly (missing a quart or two).
Chances are slim to none it’s really using that much oil…more than likely not enough oil was put in during the oil change.

Back in 2010 I knew of a Dodge dealership that during your oil change if your engine took 6 qt they would only put in 5.5 qts, all oil changes were shorted 1/2 qt, the excuse gives was bogus as I know the SM got a bonus by keeping the profit margin up an did so shorting that 1/2 qt of oil on every oil change so at the end of the month he got a bigger bonus...

I'm pretty sure that in the first 2500 miles or so, engines consume a little oil while rings and seals are seating in. Not sure what "a little oil" might be in a 6.4, but maybe a half quart isn't too far off?
