Recall VB6 - 2019 DJ D2 Diesel Engine Calibration

First post on HDRAMS - found this thread as a result of my dealer surprising me with the VB6 flash and valve body recall (trans fire hazard recall) during a routine maintenance checkup. After reading this, I was terrified how my truck would act. After about a 300mi weekend trip without load, mileage is slightly increased (about 1.5-2mpg) and normal driving seems basically fine. Cold starts are fine. The idle cabin shake that people mention in this thread is increased, but I wouldn't call it intolerable... its a diesel truck after all.

It's my understanding that the recall you are referring to is for a transmission valve body pressure issue.
the trans fluid overheats, and pressure increases to force fluid out onto a heat source... i.e. exhaust... and can lead to fire. The VB6 flash recall has to do with emissions, and that is what started the shift, surge, and fuel mileage problems!

They performed both recalls at the same time - so yes, you're correct - the W03 recall is the valve body, while the VB6 is related to the engine calibration.

Just curious, what was the approximate altitude of the road trip that you recently took? My issues were not initially noticeable until I drove above 4000 foot elevation, but increasingly became worse the further I drove, until I eventually could definitely feel it at sea level.

I completely agree! Issues like this make it seem so obvious why people choose to tune and mod their trucks when even FCA can't seem to get the tunes dialed in properly!

For now though, I'll be happy with mine. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed the CP4 behaves.

I'm not disputing the issues some of you are facing with this surging (my truck does not) but FCA has to warranty the truck, the aftermarket tuners do not.

I just recently found out that Ram went to the so called remake version of the CP4. Well lets hope

Agreed, thats why I have no intention of voiding any warranty with Ram... They could buy me out of the warranty, but I doubt that would happen.

The only thing I've seen is a post that there's a replacement pump being used that has symmetrical cam lobes instead of asymmetrical lobes. There was a tech note posted about dealers using the correct flash for the correct pump and noisy pumps if done incorrectly.

What's a remake of the cp4 pump mean?

Look up at my post. It's just a different internal shaft with a change to the cam lobe shape.

Unless RAM/Cummins adds a disaster prevention setup like the aftermarket one (coming soon they claim), the CP4 is still a poor design subject to failure from contaminated fuel or air. I'm adding a fuel treatment to improve lubricity and tracking/recording ALL fuel purchases.

RAM/Cummins best bet is to develop a higher volume/pressure version of the venerable CP3 and retrofit all 2019-2020 trucks.

See my post #239. My experience surging gets worse with higher elevation. Also with less load it’s more noticeable.
The 2-3 shifts are very HARSH with 26K total load at 7-10% grades and 7-9k ft elevation.

After 3 to 4 thousands miles I have not had an issue. with mixed long trips and city driving. However I have not towed with it yet. The Aisin update was performed as well, but again I have not towed with it. About the VB6 recall, in Comifornia you can not re-register your truck if its not performed.

Ok has anyone done this updated tsb??? Any insight should I go back to dealer and have it done... Not sure what it'll fix can someone ellaborate....

I have had the new update completed, over a week ago. This is the new supposed fix to the previous VB6 fix... ugh.. it changed the issues, but in my opinion did not fix the issues. still shifts weird, and hesitates.

I think they have reached the limits of what the Aisin can hold and/or there are internal limitations that programming can't fix. They are obviously chasing their tail. If you look at the Nissan that had the 5.0 V-8 Cummins, they also had a terrible time with their version of the Aisin.

As long as it doesn't hurt itself, I'll just live with it, and hope the new transmission on the way works a whole lot better, and proves reliable by the time I am ready to trade.

I am at the trade point now! I don't want to wait for the what ifs to come to reality. The truck performed great when I bought it. After they monkeyed with it, is when the issues happened. They caused the issues. Part of the problem is that they seem to be under the pressure of trying to be the top dog... pushing the next great product out regardless of outcome.
