Hey guys! New to the forum. Just had a question… I had my 2017 Ram 2500 with 103,000 miles on it get new tires. They told me that they tried to do a wheel alignment on the truck but had an issue. So they didn’t do it. I got the truck back and doing my errands and noticed that there’s a sway now in the back of the truck. I don’t know if the place did damage but it didn’t sway before I left it there. Yes I had them put the same size tire on it. What do you guys think? Thanks for any feedback, Matt

How many miles on the tires and how much air pressure? Sometimes putting a few miles the tires will fix that. Other than that you may need to warranty the tires

Why did they turn away the alignment? Had an issue with the truck or the machine? if the truck, did they tell you of any worn component?

They did say something about the front of the truck was welded and something about a recall and that’s why it was welded but you should be able to get an alignment I would think

A "Ram welded tie rod" refers to a tie rod on a Dodge Ram truck, specifically from the 2013-2018 model years, where the adjusting nuts on the drag link assembly (part of the tie rod system) are welded to the adjuster sleeve as part of a safety recall, preventing them from loosening and potentially causing steering issues due to a potential separation of the drag link components.

Key points about Ram welded tie rods:
  • Recall issue:
This welding process was implemented to address a safety recall on certain Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks where the drag link could loosen due to the jam nuts not being adequately secured.
  • What is welded:
The jam nuts on the adjuster sleeve of the drag link are welded to prevent them from coming loose over time.
  • Importance of repair:
If your Ram truck falls within the affected model years, it is crucial to have the drag link assembly inspected and the nuts welded as part of the recall repair to ensure safe steering.

We own a 2016 Ram 2500 4x4 in rural Western Colorado and have a 2014 Ram 4x4 in our family in Wyoming. It's a long trip to the Ram dealerships from both locations. A 1 and 1/2 hour drive one way to our Ram dealership in Montrose. Gotta get those drag link nuts welded forever somedecade really soon. Same with the software update on the Cummins. It's very important to Stellantis and Cummins to do so.

Our 2016 truck was swaying in the rear due to the 35 inch spare tire mounted underneath wasn't tight. A 77 lb tire plus the steel wheel swaying around hanging on the cable makes for a lot of movement.

On my 2014 3500 the jam nuts were tacked welded, not welded all the way around as a permanate fix. I would assume most alignment I would not have the (simple equipment) to cut the tack welds with a cutoff wheel, perform the alignment and then tach weld the jam nuts again. Alternative solution would be that $1100.00 aftermarket upgrade.

I’ll have to check the spare good idea

We had our 2016 Ram 2500 4x4 Power Wagon alignment performed in Grand Junction long before the recall. The drag nuts came loose that same week coming down a steep and narrow dirt washboard road outside of Sheridan, Wyoming. The steering wheel position did a rapid 180 degree repositioning ending up with it upside down while I was driving straight. Drove it to an alignment shop in Sheridan and they used Locktite on the nuts. I marked the positions with paint. The recall came long afterwards, but I haven't had it aligned since which was over 100K miles ago. The nut positions I check when servicing. Off a bit off on the alignment, but it has 53K on the 3rd set of tires. Rather not touch it. I would recommend getting it done per Ram's recall or by installing the replacement part.

You can get an alignment, but without grinding the weld they won’t be able to re-center the steering wheel. The rest of the adjustments, the ones that effect handling and tire wear, are unaffected by the recall weld.
