No Start just "Click"

Brand new 2022 2500. 1800miles.

Went to start truck after sat in parking lot for about an hour and it just makes a single click noise. It does not even attempt to start. Tried jumping, no luck. Dealer sent a tow truck to pick up and it's going to get looked at in the morning.

Any ideas? Thanks for the help!

seems like a common theme. No wonder Ram is second to last in JD powers dependability study.. https://www.jdpower.com/business/press-releases/2022-us-vehicle-dependability-study hopefully it is something minor. On my 2020 I had to have both the battery and alternator replaced under warranty early on. It did a similar thing started fine pulled it out of the garage shut it off and an hour later deader than a door nail.

My brother had that happen. Turned out a battery shorted internally and took out the other battery. New batteries solved the problem. Ram has had bad battery issues, could be what happened.

If batteries are good it could be a bad solenoid or relay. If so you can get yourself started easy by:
Pulling the starter relay, and put the key in the RUN position.
Take a short piece of wire and jump (in the fuse box) between where pins 30 (3) and 87 (5) on the relay would go.
Engine will start right back up.

Dealer called today and Said it was a bad starter. They told me they have seen this before on the hemi models but never on the Cummins. Also they don't know when they can get a new one so they stuck me in a loaner truck. Sucks big time.

For posterity, another owner had a similar problem (bad starter) and also a blown 250A shunt on the passenger side battery.

That was a big drop on the Powers report. In 2021 RAM was higher than both Ford and GM . Really huge drop in in a year .

Used John's trick outlined above and quickly realized my batteries were weak because the starter would only turn over the motor a few times before it weakend and slowed to a stop.

Used the trusty '99 to jump the '21 and was able to move her off the street back into the garage. Batteries will sit on charger overnight and we'll reassess in the morning.

Youre right. I was originally trying to jump the truck with my 99 the "normal way" with cables battery to battery pushing the start button on the 21 and I was still just getting a click.

Really weird. Modern Ram trucks are more computer and less truck.

They are all going that way its a shame but its planned obsolescence and non serviceability. My cousin has a newer mazda you cant even change the battery in it without having a reset code the dealer wont give you. They don’t want people working on their own vehicles!

Here the provincial liberals almost passed a law where you would not be able to buy parts without having a mechanics licence!

You got me curious now as I carry a jump pack and when my batteries were weak it would not boost it.

What is the trick when using a lithium pack? Pull relay, short across with jump pack on battery?

Yes. Thats exactly it, you can do it by going under the truck but this way is cleaner and easier on the back lol

The car was the ticket for him as it was giving enough constant voltage to fool the BCM

Make sure you're connecting the charger on the other side of the IBS module.

The issue here as I see it, is the jump needs to be on the chassis side of the IBS, and on the driver side batt closest to starter, not directly to the battery (-) post, and the boost box left for a minute or two before attempting a start so the IBS thinks there's enough battery voltage to allow the PCM to crank the truck. Cycling the start button may also be wise. I do see he moved the boost boxes to chassis/alternator ground, but he first started with it on the pax side battery (also wrong).

The relay jump trick will work, but so will the correct jump/boost procedure.

Some jump packs (like the NOCO ones) also have a button that forces them to output voltage even if they don’t detect anything on the other side. That will usually solve the problem.

That's right, forgot about that. My GBX155 didn't have any trouble starting my truck the one time I needed it. The smaller Goloo I had before was useless and that explains it. That said, the Goloo worked on my old Audi the one time I needed it at the airport.

I also got a jump from a wrecker once in the truck and I'm pretty sure he had the same "option" on his big jump box as it wouldn't crank the first time he tried.
