Hard Shifts all of a sudden to 2nd and 6th gear - 68RFE

My truck is 2024 Big Horn Crew Cab with the 6.7 and only has 1,370 miles.

This is my first diesel truck so I realize things are going to be a little different for me but I also know the transmission shouldn't have such a hard shift - almost like its hunting for the gear before it finds it feeling

I think you are right about about how hard or soft you get on the pedal makes a difference in the shift because I notice a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd for sure when I feather the pedal versus a harder push on the pedal for a quicker shift.

I never noticed it towing though but really wasn't looking for the weird shifts either - Car trailer with a 2007 Jeep on the trailer (about 6k) and didnt notice the trailer was back there and was able to get 18.5mpg.

I am not due for service yet (two free Oil Changes from the dealership) so when its due for service I am also going to have them look at the transmission so its documented

I am wondering if this it the reason why they put the 68RFE to pasture in the 2025 HD Models and went with the 8 speed ZF - also wonder if the 68RFE grenades if there is a way to get it changed over to the newer 8 speed transmission - food for thought

My truck has shifted smooth up until last Thursday. Didn't matter whether it was hard or soft acceleration. Then for no reason at all the hard shifting, gear hunting, and bucking started. As stated above, I'm already looking at alternative options for when the warranty is over and by then someone will most likely have a swap kit for the 8 speed ZF available which furthers the options even more. I also use my Ram to pull my Gladiator on a 21 foot trailer, about 9000# combined load and i agree, this Ram eats it up. But I don't like having reliability concerns when I'm pulling a load 100's of miles from home. I LOVE the ZF in the JT. It's a great transmission that sees some hard offroad use. I think a heavier ZF in the HD trucks will make this a very solid platform.

Update on my transmission issue:
Just got off the phone with the Service Writer and he said the Tech told him there is a thrust bearing inside the transmission that is the incorrect size or incorrectly installed. He actually said incorrect size but I don't think that's possible. I know they can possibly be installed upside down. They have opened a Star case with corporate Engineering for guidance. Anyway, the transmission has to come out and I suspect it will end up getting replaced. I'm basing that on the cost of labor to remove, rebuild, and replace vs just replacing. If it ends up being replaced, I don't know how I would be able to verify it is a new trans vs a remanufactured one. I guess it really doesn't matter as long as it works. Hopefully this doesnt turn into a 2 month repair. I'll update when I know more.

Damn hope you get it fixed sooner than later. Glad mine was just a sensor.... GL
They're actually rebuilding it. I'm really surprised about this because of the cost of labor. Supposedly parts are arriving today. They've had it for 2 weeks today. I asked to speak with the Tech when I go to pick it up so I can get detailed info on what he found. I'll update when I know more.

I'm watching this closely as mine just started it. Just over 27,000 miles, no codes.

Finally an update. After nearly 5 weeks I got my truck back today!! 12/27-1/28!! Long story short, I got a new transmission. I have no idea what failed in the original one but corporate wanted it back. This whole ordeal has been lies and bs the entire time. What a hassle this has been. I honestly believe they were sitting on this for 3-1/2 weeks before they even looked at it. I have it all documented and I hope they send me a request for a survey. It's sad there's not much integrity left anymore. Good luck to those of you dealing with similar issues.

Integrity unfortunately is a thing of the past, glad you finally got it taken cared of.
