2022 2500 Ram ticking - Cummins SO

I’m 45k into my truck, I’ve done every oil change myself and never once did my truck make that sound.
Maybe @Dalluge26 can report back if the tick went away since he’s probably well past that 500 mile number in my post. A very large percentage of people have noticed a light typewriter style tick after an oil change that goes away once the oil settles in.

The bigger question is why do some trucks do that, while others do not? You would think all of these trucks would perform similarly when it comes to things like routine maintenance. If the truck is making good oil pressure and volume at start up, whatever bleed down the lifters experience should be rectified rapidly. It shouldn’t take 500 miles to adequately charge the lifters and remove any trapped air, assuming that’s where the “tick” noise is coming from….

I had the tick and now have about 400 miles with my fix (Hamilton tappets) with no tick since the conversion.

My tick I first noticed only at idle and only after warm up. It never occurred at first cold start of the day. It was very random only hearing a tick once every 10 or so seconds. If you weren't listening for it you might not even notice. It started to get more frequent. I read someone say they could hear it a lot around the 1500rpm band. I rolled my window down and got next to a wall and sure enough it was loud and ticking at every rpm.

I read lots of good things about the wagler solid lifter conversion but then I read someone did it and the tapping eventually came back.

I haven't read of anyone having the tapping\ticking come back with the Hamilton conversion. Im satisfied so far but still 400 miles ain't much.

Plus side, I can run 15w40 again.

Why do some trucks need the AB filter while I’ve been running a AA for the last 8k miles with no regen issues? Beats me dude.

Good question. Wish I could explain it.
Put that AA filter in my truck and it was in a constant state of regeneration.

The tick went away once I hit about 600 miles. I just changed my oil the other day, it's back again.
Since I've already had the lifters and cam replaced I won't go past 6k between changes. I also replace fuel filters every 10-12k miles.

This truck has always had a rattle that starts around 1800- 2000 rpms. I'm at the point where I'm just going to drive it and not worry about it.

6k between oil changes wont do anything but burn through your money

Yep i go by the oil change percentage when it hits 0 i change it, i have no odd noises at all and oil analysis shows its still good
You are also no longer emissions compliant correct? You should be sure to include that when you’re making oil change recommendations as there’s a significant difference in oil performance and life between a truck that is full emissions intact, and one that is not.

My Truck was the same before the delete plus i maintain a few 19+ that are intact same results…. One of them is just shy of 300k miles on his 2021 3500 as it is used for hot shot

@usernamechecksout - trying to make an informed decision on a Hamilton conversion prior to warranty expiration. How’s yours treating you so far?

I feel much better after doing my conversion. I still have some faint tapping that is the same I've had since installing the Hamilton conversion. It's much quieter, fainter and more consistent than the hydraulic lifters. The hydraulic lifters were all over the place. Sometimes they were loud, sometimes fast, sometimes only happened when hot.

My suspicion is my faint tapping is because I need to go back in one more time to adjust the valve clearances to eliminate the sound completely.

But yes, I am very satisfied with doing mine. It gives a peace of mind knowing that I can keep a better eye/ear on it and get real time feedback over wondering if the hydraulic lifters are going to randomly fail or make something else worse.

Have about 12k miles on the conversion btw.

Good luck with your decision.
