Just bought a 5th wheel hitch and trailer and heading to the black hills/ wall drug and bad lands

Hey everyone, anyone heading to or just went to SD? We are leaving to go on the 11th of august and see where this trip takes us. I just recently left my job and will be starting a new one but in the mean time taking the family west... we live in Minnesota

Any one have advice ? On any special place to go or stay? I know that sturgis is going in right now but we are not looking for that crowd just family fun...

I accidentally made the mistake of pulling off to check out what this wall drug was all about. Big mistake, don't do it with the RV, no room to get around. We ended up camping at a place and going back in just the truck, was hard enough to find a place to park with that thing. It was fun to walk around all the shops, very packed atmosphere. I wouldn't go on the weekend, as people come from hundreds of miles around. All in all good time spent, get the hot apple pie and ice cream, there made fresh right in front of you

We stayed at someplace in rapid city, but I'd be lying if I told yah were as the memory flew the coop years ago. We made a couple day trips out of it, one to wall and two to the bad lands. Enough to keep the whole fam interested. Road trip baby

It's been about 7 years since we went, but that's what comes to mind off the top of my head. We'll be going again next year.

Also...my back is sore just from looking at that Companion slider. It's a great hitch, but oh my did moving it around suck.

Enjoy. We liked Custer sp the best. Make sure to tour all the routes from your vehicle, lots of scenery and wild life to enjoy. Be safe

never seen a cyclone that wasnt a toy hauler. Now it being any older model fiver it might have a lower gvwr and the new model srw trucks do have a higher gvwr & gcwr so it might be close. But yikes. Being an old truck driver, I wouldn't feel comfortable with a srw hauling a 20k tri axle. But hey that's just mo, plus I might be a bit of a wus In my old age. Everyone has there own comfort level.

Yeah, be interesting to see the numbers. TH usually have a high GVWR like you pointed out. I know my SRW can't safely pull a 20k fiver, not loaded to GVWR anyway. I might get away with close to 18k but PL with that much pin wgt gets sketchy.

Around Mt. Rushmore, be careful if you are bringing your 5'r in.. some of those twisty forest roads have really tight turning radius's and low ceiling tunnels.

I’ll run this through a CAT scale for everyone!!!!!

Sitting in SD now pulled great, I found a class a motorhome, three other guys with fifth wheels and another guy pull in a 35 foot trailer with six quads.... everyone was heading out to Sturgis, everyone commented on how large this trailer was and was impressed. We all Had a convoy running down the road together between 70 and 75 mph. What a fun group of people!!!

The speed limit out here is 80 miles an hour, for all those who do not know...

Just gonna drop this here for anyone who may not have heard this story.

Wow, what a read. Read it all from pg 1-7. This is always a hot topic with much divisiveness and a misunderstanding of the numbers. At the end of the day, the facts from the scales are pretty much the end all be all. Being a full timer, i hear these stories all the time and people are very shocked by real world actual numbers and how quick one number shifts one way and another shifts another way as you load weight in your vehicle. I see people all the time hauling 40' + tri axle with a srw truck and it just makes me tighten up. That is the number one reason why i bought the biggest hauling machine that they offer, so that way going forward I can purchase whatever and not have to worry about truck capability issues and fines and tickets, but most importantly the safety side of the matter and getting myself and family or others injured or killed. Dramatic yes but this can happen to you and innocent others affected by our decisions. Then there is the dreaded insurance coverage that we all know will do absolutely anything when a claim is presented. Then if and when your denied your life could possibly be changed forever with losing between 100,000 - 300,000 worth of your equipment ? then there's hundreds of possible thousands of medical bills on your behalf and then there's getting sued from the other party for there equipment and medical bills. Then theres the possibility if found negligent you could face jail time wich would change your family's livelihood forever.. this is all worst case scenario and again dramatic but this is reality snd could happen to anybody who is not on top of their vehicle specific weight numbers and capabilities. Know your numbers, its up to you.
MY father in law thinks because he drives a duelly that he can haul anything and argues with me every time we see each other as I explain to him his model vs mine and his is not designed for what he's hauling and that my old 2500 was rated for more than his.
None of this talk is designed or pointed toward any one person. Just me venting on how important imop it is to be knowledgeable and responsible, you could change or save a life. Ok I'm done

Not to be a debbie downer, but unless you've upgraded your trailer tires to ribbed tires like Sailuns, G604, etc., Goodyear Endurance (US made 87MPH rating but only come in D and E), or LT tires (not a fan), most ST tires are only rated to 65MPH. The cause of many a blowout is overheating those 65MPH rated tires running down the highway at 75 or better. I put the GY on our 5th and sold the Westlake chinabombs that came on it.

FWIW, my 3500 HO 4x4 LWB is rated to tow 25K but I'd hit probably hit the payload limit (3700) long before that.
