A couple days ago while driving, the belt jumped off. Had it towed to dealer. They inspected everything and found nothing wrong with any of the pulleys or belt. I have 60,000 miles on it. There is no squeaking or rattling noise at all. Watching the belt while engine is running looks to be true and smooth, no wobbling or jumping. Have about 100 miles on it since they put the belt back on with no problems. Has anyone ever had this happen for no apparent reason ? I wish they would have found something. I lost PS and PB when it happened.

That cant happen if everything is normal. Its likely a bad tensioner

I agree. Is there a way to tell if tensioner is bad?

Other than feeling the tension with a breaker bar or checking the deflection on the belt no. But if you grab the belt you should not be able to twist it or move it much

Thanks. I'll check that. Someone told me today to put a Gates tensioner and HD Gates belt.

There is nothing wrong with OEM if it is working properly. I would not change parts at random. The gates is not bad If you do need to change them

Lost the AC belt on the wife's '04 Chevy. 140K miles. Couldn't find any reason why. Put a new belt on and it's been running fine for 2 years now.
Chevy runs a separate belt for the AC.

Can't get to passenger side of belt but can pull belt out a couple inches and twist it on drivers side which is the longer side of belt.

Yea that sounds like a weak tensioner. But how hard were you pulling on it?

A little force. It's not loose. It has some tension on it.
Ill try and remember to check mine by pulling on it when it stops raining but iirc it should be difficult to get much movement on the belt with a good tensioner

Thanks. I appreciate your help

Drove it about 10 miles before it threw belt while driving. Didn't hear any noise, just lost PS and PB. Dealer said checked all pulleys and belt. Wish They would have found something. I tow quite a bit and now I'm waiting on it to happen while towing. Should be a way to check tensioner for weak spring.

Thanks. I appreciate your help
With my tensioner I can move the belt about 1/2-3/4” with little effort so yours should be fine. I am at a loss of what it could be for you unless as mentioned some foreign object caused it but the dealer should have seen Some evidence of a rodent.

Small animal or other foreign object?
I had a small animal (rat) under the hood, and it stayed there for 10 miles decided to move around, then went thru the belt.
When that happens, the belt explodes, and so does Mr Rat.
It took out the belt and tensioner, and made a bit of a mess…
