After the TSB for the DPF about 6 months ago, the truck was doing a regen far more often. i did have this warning once before , it went into regen and cleared. this time its on and has been about a week.
truck is a 2020 with about 69,000 on it. it is tuned, but i typically keep it in street mode and dont beat on it to hard. I do a good amount of short trip city driving, but at least good long hour drives at 2k rpm every few days.
I will absolutely not pay a dealer to swap this thing out. i have seen a bunch of videos for people pulling it and cleaning it. has anyone done it? looks like a semi simple unbolt job and possibly having to pull a cross member.

Or.... is there a way to force a regen and see if i can burn it all off?

Do you happen to know what the TSB number is you’re referring to? I’ve never heard of a TSB specifically for the DPF.

id have to see what paperwork i have for it. i know it was a filter and a flash

i didnt have time to go back and look for the TSB. i did hook my EZ link to try and force a regen. but it wouldnt let me go through with it, i assume because of the code. at this point i may just have to let the dealer look at it. if i can find time, i may try to drop the filter and clean it.

The only DEF recall for 2019+ that I'm aware of is TSB 18-034-21, April 2, 2021. It described why getting codes for overfilling, crystallization, or ice. It didn't involve any repairs, only instructions on how to drive the truck to clear the sensor.

so good news on a couple fronts. i thought i was out of warranty, but my powertrain and emissions warranty runs until 9/25. so on the upside i will let the dealer figure it out. In January of 24 the dealer performed recall 90A which was the DEF pump and ZD4 which was the software flash that coincided. The frequency of regen changed allot after those recalls. Either case, sounds like i am in the clear for either paying for a filter or pulling it out to try flushing.

Good on you if your dealer will warranty a tuned truck.

Even if you return it to stock, I'd think the first they they would look for is # of times the PCM has been flashed. Unless you've swapped PCM's...

Its been back to them in its current configuration for a few things, they havent flagged it for anything to date. i guess i hadnt even considered that part of the equation.
from a more defensive posture, based on the tune setup, 69,000 and a clogged DPF would have me looking for something other than the tune. granted they could probably just take that stance.

Just an update, i climbed under on saturday to see if i could pull the dpf to clean. I did get everything unbolted front and back. I could not see a path forward to dropping it without pulling the trans cross member out so i gave up.
i was able to stick my hand into the front side inlet. caked in very fine black soot. similar to breaking a toner cartridge. do not advise doing that again. In any case without a lift, i am going to make the appointment to drop it off and let the dealer worry about it. with any luck the emission warranty will still be in place and take care of it.

Additional update prior to dropping it off in the morning. I swapped out the CCV filter last night, was absolutely saturated. This afternoon i am going to put the stock files back on and let them have a look. Just based on how the world seems to operate these days i expect they will have it for at least the weekend. but i will update when i get it back.

Update on an update, but good information. So the dealer said it was the soot sensor that went bad. Not under warranty. About $400- there are hundreds of these on backorder though. Somehow they got one and have it in this morning. however they could still not force a regen and have determined the DPF is legitimately full. The silver lining, they are covering the cost of the DPF and giving me a 2 year warranty on it. They wont have it for a couple days so a longer wait. but I am please with the dealership so far. I had read enough horror stories that I was concerned.

Make sure you are using fresh, good diesel and preferably a good diesel additive, as well. Higher cetane equates to more complete combustion which in turn translate to less PM produced. That is that much less PM, or soot, to not have to through your EGR and into your DPF.

Also, try this as directed. $23 a Walmart and there is a $10 rebate.

As a final update to this. Picked up the truck on Friday. In the end, the soot level sensor was on me, but the DPF replacement was covered by the dealer. Along with it, they told me that they were now covering the system with a lifetime warranty. Hopefully i wont have another issue and have to test this. The dealer I go to has lifetime free oil changes, so no cost to that. but they also rotated tires, did the fuel filters and the soot sensor ( originally quoted at $418 ) all for about $518 out the door. They had the truck longer than i would have liked, but in the end i am pleased with the outcome.

Sounds like you got yourself a great dealer! Very nice.

DPF not DEF

Hey CMC76. I am having similar issues i think that you are having, and am starting to suspect a dpf sensor. There are 2 of them. One is a differential pressure sensor that measures inlet and outlet pressure on the DPF, the other is a sensor that is screwed into the exhaust system after the SCR. Do you happen to know which they replaced? One looks like a $40 part, the other about $180. So 400 sounds pretty steep.

What issue(s) are you experiencing?

Alpha OBD (android) or JSCAN (I-phone), bypass cable and MX+ Bluetooth obd reader. You can manually force a regen with either.
I haven't been able to find anyone who has done a forced regen with that unit? Have you done one? I need to do it for my 2021. I am at 100% DPF full with the P242F code
