Edit to add: so the truck is already purchased now I need help figuring some things out, post #4

Hey all, 1st time posting in 4th gen section. I own a 2019 but I have a need for a work truck and I'm going to start shopping for one. Need some input from you folks with these trucks.

Would ideally buy one with manual gear box, while manuals are pretty straight forward, are there any common issues with manual GB to look for?

If not a manual, it would likely be one with a 68rfe. I've never driven one so don't know how they behave. What signs to look for to make sure I don't get one with issues? When 68rfe starts "going" what does it do? Is it easy to tell if it's been upgraded with aftermarket parts?

Engine itself. Should be fairly simple and 4th gen are more robust than the 4.5, but I've only ever dealt with my Cummins and it's been trouble free since new. Anything specific to look for?

If I don't buy deleted, I will delete myself from the start so not really worrying about emissions. Not really worrying about anything else on a truck either.

our old friend rust. The rockers on the 4th gens like to go. Occasional vgt actuators, city diesel makes a nice replacement. Obviously find one that has been maintained, private owner sale with a history is preferred. Dealers buy to flip and don’t know the history. Trans parts included. The motors have been pretty good. Do the manuals have the dual mass flywheel still? I think those were picky.

Got a truck and a some questions to go with it.
Truck 1st. 2015 RAM 2500 Outdoorsman edition, CCLB 4x4. Came with a 100 gal slip tank with a pump in the box, and a 5th wheel hitch with rails.
It's got 126K miles on it 2600 running hours and 2100 idle hours :D, no rust at all which is surprising considering everything else I've looked at in my area, no leaks other than a tiny rear main seal leak, a small ding on a side of a box, few scratches which doesn't bother me as it is a work truck for me, it's deleted, came with a EFI Live tuner, paid about $21K US for it.
A few photos of the truck that I have.2024-08-28-10-27-02-876.jpg2024-09-04-11-49-51-252.jpg

I'm just gonna dump all the questions here even though some may have been answered already elsewhere in the forum..
  • Is there a way to find out which tune I have? Power level? Transmission tune?? Can I find out who the tuner is in case I need to contact them to make any changes? As mentioned it came with EFI Live and there's a file I can see on the device. @H3LZSN1P3R
  • Is there a way to turn off the silly tire pressure warning through the programmer of I've got to have an ALPHA OBD for it? It keeps telling me to inflate my rear tires to 80psi (nope!)
  • It's straight piped, is it normal to hear turbo whistle? I think it's a bit quieter when it's warm but pretty loud when cold. (Need to drive more to confirm)
  • 68RFE is one of the things that bother me (unfortunately couldn't find a nice and fairly priced manual truck). If tranny start going, will replacing a valve body with solenoid fix the issue or is it going to be too late and such modification should be performed before that??
  • Is it easy to tell if transmission was upgraded in any way? I will likely start changing fluids in about a week's time just to make sure they're all good to start with, will drop tranny's oil pan.
  • Grid heater bolt is a 2nd thing that bothers me. Living in Alberta, I can't delete it, will the below 2 product take care of business, anyone got any experience with them?
    BD Intake Elbow
    BD Intake Heater Kit
Will also be getting EGR and Cooler delete kit to go with Intake Elbow as EGR is already disabled and disconnected.
  • What's the consensus on Fuel Filter conversion kits?? I'm looking at either one of the 2 below:
    FASS
    Cat
  • When did they 1st bring in Android Auto?? This 8.4 uconnect has no Nav so I thought, no problems, I'll just hook up my phone, but no, either not there or I couldn't figure it out. Had to dig out my old phone holder...

Tune file - unless it says who the tuner is in the file name not likely to know who it is but if you put the tune file name here. I may be able to tell you who its from as some have a specific way of labeling the tunes.

TPMS - alfa can do it or Jscan

Turbo sound.- yes it is normal to hear the turbo more on warm up especially if the tune is setup with the actuator to move to warm up faster.

Trans - unless there is a labeled part in the trans you wont know if its been touched lets hope the tune has trans tuning and you will be ok, if you are not using the truck for huge power i would suggest you get the BD protect 68 kit

Grid heater - BD just came out with a new product to eliminate the nut issue its 2xx$ so really reasonable for a piece of mind

Fuel filters - OEM is best just leave it be do not believe the hype all the research shows the OEM is better

android auto - i believer the first year AA and CarPlay worked with the 8.4 was 2018 so you could swap to a 2018 unit if that was important to you

That is a TON of idle hours i hope it was deleted before they idled it that much lol

X-over pipe looks new, even on my 2019 it started getting that "rainbow" color due to heat, so likely it was deleted from the start.

My 2018 hasn’t liked adjusting the TPMS via JScan. I can’t pull the pin on the RFH module to reset it. Jimmy, a well known member suggested Alpha for I only have Apple products. Mentioning this cause if you can get alpha do that to adjust tpms

Yeah looks like I'm stuck with this tire pressure warning, I don't feel like spending a few hundreds just to be able to change that and I don't need it for anything else, not messing with other settings.

File name is CME_697531_SINGLE_AC.ctz

There is a long talk in one of the FB Cummins groups, where they discuss this new product, people say it eliminates the one one bolt failure but the 2nd bolt can still fail?? Not sure what this is about until I actually open it and see for myself.

I don't need or want any extra power, don't want to go into troubles replacing head studs or gaskets, etc, if the tune is there to only take advantage of the deletes I'm OK with that and if it's some hi power race tune I'd want to switch it to something mild. I'm only hauling myself and some hand tools. Is this the protect68 kit from BD you were referring to?

It’s not expensive, bypass cable and a VIN license and you can adjust but I can’t confirm Alfaobd will work cause JScan didn’t for me. However it does come in handy checking codes, changing settings you think you may not like but take a look at the thread on it lots to cool features

Dont need a bypass on a 2015 lol

That file name is nothing that i have come across unfortunately

The FB group is full of it there is nothing else that can fail the ONLY failure is the one nut that was removed with the kit.

That kit is the one with the pressure booster you don't need that if your tune has trans tuning. I would get a new tune from CCS load it to your current EFI live personally i dont like not knowing what tunes i have
