Strange scratches - from what?

Bought a new-to-me 2021 2500 6.7 and the tailgate as some weird scratches / scuffs at the top. See pics below.

Any idea what could have caused these? I’m not concerned that they exist, more just confused what would have scratched only that outer / upper area of the tailgate

Welcome aboard! Looks to me like rough use/loading by prior owner. I've got a few similar nicks in mine.

Mine looks just as bad maybe even more so. Since it's a plastic cap, it's prone to scratching when hauling longer materials in your bed.

Thats from a truck cap likely with the wrong lip seal on the back hatch that rubbed on the gate, i have seen it before and it looks the exact same

Yep, the seal on the cap on my ‘20 wore all the way to bare metal in a few spots.

I used the Splash Wham-o from Genos to fix mine that was broken on one end before I bought the truck and also to cover a dent, I made in the metal just below the plastic and it looks great.

Maybe also from a, or lack of, a bike tailgate pad??
