Did an oil change yesterday and discovered that when I had a dealer do an oil change for me a couple months ago (I always do my own, but I was on the road at the time) they put the wrong oil filter on. The 6.4L in these trucks calls for 4892339BE (photo 1), but the dealer installed 4884899AC (photo 2). It technically fits, but it's a larger canister, meaning it needs more oil, and because of the size it was a pain to get off without making a mess. I know some people like to put larger filters on, but the engineers specified the filter they did for a reason. It certainly wasn't cost savings, as the correct one costs more.

Unfortunately while I was down there doing my usual once-over of everything I discovered I've got a hole in my front driveshaft-case CV joint boot (photo 3) and it's slung most or all of it's grease out in a nice ring (photo 4). Guess I'll be taking the truck in for some warranty work. One of the bearings on the front axle passenger side stub shaft U-joint also looks to be having a lubrication issue (photo 5), though I've never seen a U-joint shedding its grease without it being worn nearly to dust. Every other U-joint bearing cup is clean.

I've read the post of many Hemi guy's on another forum who love using a bigger oil filter, so far you are the first one to say your engine need more oil when using one....

Using a larger filter would have to require more oil, unlesss you don't fill it up to the fill line on the dipstick. A lot of the Hemi car guys like to swap out to the SRT oil filter, which is larger than the "standard" filter and they all run 1/2qt more oil to make the fill line.

I mentioned this because if the dealer is just dumping 6qt in when they do the change with this filter they're underfilling.

Either way, they're using the wrong part number.

6 quarts? Its a 7 quart capacity w/OEM filter. Always gets me right to about 1/4" below the "full" mark on the dipstick. Using OEM size Purolator One filter.
