Customer Satisfaction Notice 90A Diesel Exhaust Fluid

Got a call from the service monkey today saying parts are in and they can get me in Thursday or Friday. I asked what ‘’the parts’’ actually are and he said a new pee pump. I will quiz them more on Friday when I go in.
What ended up happening with that Friday appointment ?

They put in a ‘’new and improved, gerrinteed not to fail ‘’ DEF pump and the flash. Truthfully I was so busy B.S‘n with the dealership owner about the wack of 1/2 ton 4th gen Classics they had on the lot and my attempted plan to buy a neighbours Cummins 1st gen to get more deets.

According to my Ram app, I have a 90A recall but it shows that they will replace the "Diesel Exhaust Fluid delivery module", whatever that is. I guess it could be part of the tank or pump? I don't have access to my mail so don't have the paper version.

Its the pump assembly apparently, my 19 has it aswell a local dealer called me and told me its the complete tank but others who have had it done say differently

UPDATE!

the high pressure test that STAR had the dealer run showed no leaks at the HPFP....... they are pulling injectors now and going to send them out for testing.... another week here we go!
Well, perhaps if you just simply started driving it correctly within the very narrow, but unstated and non-advertised parameters that you must now accept without question or you will be labeled a dolt it will function correctly.

Had the 90A and the Y43 recalls done today
Any update? Any noticeable fuel econ issues?

My 2020 is getting 90A recall right now. Before 90A: Avg 18.6 MPG truck only on 35s, 14.5 MPG pulling 20' tow behind (empty), and 12.8 MPG same trailer loaded (8K-10K). I'll update my findings good or bad.

I have not notice any difference in MPG at all but I don't really keep track of it. I did go on a couple long 200 mile trips with no towing cause its winter here.
As far as the MPG goes even though mileage is not my priority I would have noticed any significant change., but it all seems normal.

Thank you for the update. Good to know.

Its only for the DEF pump nothing to do with fuel

Well, she be running fine so far, back up to 19 MPG on light throttle and empty. I went in with 100% full DEF, they filled it again to 75% as per "winter specs" even though I live on the coast of PNW haha. Barely hits freezing temps more than 1 week out of the year.

DEF has zero bearing on fuel economy.

I’d love to see something in writing for those “winter specs”.

CAUSE:
• Repeated freeze/thaw cycles of the urea tank to cause solid DEF crystals to form and settle on the focus tube, blocking the level sensor signal.
• Rapid temperature swings from below freezing to above freezing causing an incomplete thaw of the DEF tank. When the vehicle is powered on, the diagnostic is enabled due to thawed DEF at the tank bottom surface, but the fluid in the center is still partially frozen.
Customer not following the proper DEF fill procedure and is overfilling the tank.

Overfilling is putting in more than 100% of the tank capacity.

The ultrasonic sensor in the tank needs a little room to accurately reflect the volume.

There was a software bug where overfilling would "hang" the gauge reading at 100% all the way to empty. Overfilling also contributes to early failure of the vent valve which is one of the components replaced in the TSB.

As to the dealer's claim that it shouldn't be filled over 75%, that's utter BS.

Straight from the TSB, and there's nothing anywhere in any literature that says not to fill to 100% full.

P.S. It's not a recall, it's a TSB. Repairs only performed when there's a problem/customer complaint under warranty.

Exactly.

I think it’s easier to overfill the DEF tank when using jug, vs running a pump until it clicks.

Either way, you can fill it full any time of year when filled correctly.

When I took my truck in for the 90A and the Y43 recalls they did the 90A as if it were a normal recall with out any complaints from me. I had just under 3/4 tank of def and when finished the tech told me they were instructed to only put 2 gallons back in after completion regardless of how much I had in there.

i would have had asked for the remaining old DEF in a jug to go….
