2019 Ram 2500 6.4 squeal at start up / Chirping Noise - merged threads

In the interest of open discussion and keeping everyone in the loop:

I got a message from Mark and RamCares and let him know I appreciate the effort of trying to help people on this forum, but I am busy right now and figure I know how a dealership appointment would go. I make an appointment, drop off the truck, have to deal with the inconvenience of not having all my truck/stuff for a couple days, they spend a total of 20 minutes actual work time listening to it, and then tell me "it just does that". I will wait until I am not as busy and/or they actually fix someones rig here.

Just had a chance to respond, your honesty is certainly appreciated @Speedracer93CobraR. We are always just a PM away!

I'm also having the same issue at cold start, a loud chirping/squeaking noise coming from the exhaust area. It sounds like a 40-year-old station wagon instead of a new over 50k truck. Brought it the dealer they had it for 2 days and said there's nothing they can do, that's how they sound. I called to complain to Chrysler they told me since there's nothing to fix they can't do anything. This is my 4th Ram and I'm about to drive this truck through the dealership showroom and walk over to Ford.

I am deeply sorry for the trouble, @McGowan91. If you would be willing to follow up with us via private message to provide additional details of your most recent dealer experience, I would be happy to learn more to determine how to best assist you at this point.

So far I'm pretty happy with my new truck. I've got about 1500 miles on it and the only real issue is the rear sliding window doesn't want to close sometime and makes a ticking noise. What is driving me crazy though is the squealing noise at start up. It sounds like a belt, gets worse when you put it in gear, and then almost goes away once the truck is fully warmed up. From browsing other forums it appears this is a very common problem that a lot of 6.4 trucks have. Some owners have claimed it is the exhaust and I have crawled under the truck at start up and it does sound like it is coming from the exhaust between the engine and the cats. I haven't been able to find any information on a fix or solution to the noise. It's a little embarrassing when people want to check out your new truck and they immediately ask what that noise is.
Hello, I have a 2019, 2500, 6.4, w/1400 miles. It has the same noise. I have taken it to two Colorado dealerships and the first one did not even look at it, they just said it was normal and sent me packing. The second one looked at it and said it was "normal". The 5.7 purrs beautifully and this noise is not normal. It does stop when the motor gets HOT, not sure why heat would affect the noise other than for a bearing, but from what I have seen in the threads, everyone believes it is coming from the exhausts. The one dealer did tell me they had to remove a transmission from a 6.4 truck and removed the exhaust as part of the job. When the exhaust was reinstalled, the noise was worse. They adjusted it somehow and reduced the noise, but did not eliminate it. I sold a 2016 Ford 3.5 Ecoboost for this mess and regret it. Now I see in the threads there are several "hopefully Dodge will address this" and I am doubtful of that. I don't believe Corporate Dodge/RAM will address as it will set off a recall and cost them to address it. Whenever it costs a corporation, it turns into an uphill battle. Unless, we get numbers to approach them with , nothing is likely to happen. This forum has two pages on this issue? and more on "chirping noise". I am betting there are hundreds with this problem maybe a lot more. I don't know how popular the 6.4 is compared to the cummings, but I have seen this issue on the web, in forums, and when I talk to other 6.4 owners. I don't believe Corporate Dodge/RAM will address this unless we with the problem come in to them with numbers, as a group. If any of you have experience in this area, have access to expertise in lemon laws and consumer rights, or otherwise know how to proceed, I am happy to engage. Thanks!

Mark, unless you can represent a lot of us, I am doubtful you can do anything. This would need to be a concerted effort by many to get the Corporation to move out...

I also have this problem it sucks I've only had the truck a week.
I will be taken it back next week
But am not hopeful.

Just bought a 2020 P Wagon hard loaded. I didn't notice this at the dealership, but every time I start the truck I get a chirping/ squealing that sounds partly like a belt and partly like an exhaust issue under the truck.
It's super annoying. It seems to last until the truck warms up. It's very noticeable and embarrassing that I just bought a 62K truck and it sounds like this.

Has anyone come up with a fix for this?

I took it buy the dealer and they said it was most likely the break in period and to come back in a couple of weeks if it was still doing it...... frustrating.

Here's how this works. You get a private message from Ram Care where they tell you they want to help. You can choose 1 of 2 options. 1. You follow their advice and take it to a dealer where they "help" by getting you an appointment I guess. Then the dealer says they can't fix it and it's normal or there is no fix. 2. Do nothing and save yourself a lot of time. Both result in the truck sounding the same.
Your choice.

1st time Ram owner! I love this truck but that noise is horrible!!! 4500 miles on it. I just called my local dealer and they said they haven’t heard of any problems with the noise coming from these trucks. I’ve listened to several trucks and they all sound the same.
Not sure how you can build something that sounds like that and be proud. Maybe, that’s the problem. I’m not bashing Ram. Like I said, I love this truck. I just hope they can figure something out.

Wow this is depressing reading. Just bought my first Ram 2500 6.4. Used with 11000 miles. Didn’t notice the squeal on test but after two weeks had to run back in the house after starting truck and could not believe the horrible sound coming from underneath. Goes away completely when warm. Does come from exhaust/ cat area. Am taking to dealer this week but not optimistic. Had an 09 f150 before and never had any problems in six years I owned. Haven’t even made the first payment on Ram yet. Beyond disappointed.

Oh yeah, that’s exactly what mine has sounded like since day one. I hadn’t even thought a thing about it, figured it’s just how they sound.

2020 2500 with 6.4 and less than 5k miles. Mine has made the same chirp/chip/tick since about 2k miles. It does not go away until the engine is at operating temperature. It last much longer than waiting for oil to get to the lifters. Please let me know if anyone has found a solution for this.

Olive, no solution I am aware of - its sickening. Most say its coming from the exhaust. I am not sure as when it warms up, it goes away, only to come back very quickly after the engine cools just a little. Can't wait til winter. Perhaps the seals warm up from the exhaust and it expands them stopping the noise? I don't know, but what I think is they (RAM) won't address this unless we gather the numbers and present them to Dodge Corporate. Cheers.

Add me to the list as well, 2019 same issue. Went from a 2012 1500 and the 5.7 never sounded like this, even when the manifold bolts broke off!

I didn't hear nothing unusual in either of the videos, but I'm definitely deaf.
I can't believe no one figured this out yet, I'd be all over it (by myself) if it was my truck.
Someone mentioned a dealer working one someone's truck and they had to remove the exhaust and it sounded worse after the job was done, and then dealer fixed something up and made it sound better. The only thing you could "adjust" is tighten the flange clamps, where 2 sections of the pipes come together. I'd start there, maybe flanges aren't tight enough? Sound going away when it's hot, tell me that something is loose. Metal expands a lot when it gets hot, so whatever there is that might be loose, becomes tight. Another potential area to check is the exhaust hangers.

I have this too. It sounds exactly like the videos posted above. Mine is a 2019 manufactured at the end of 2018. When I first became concerned about it, I listened to my friend's 2017 2500 with the 6.4 and found it also sounds exactly the same.

This is either an engineering blemish on the 6.4 that will cause no issues down the road, or a massively widespread ticking time bomb. Time will tell

Hi All,
I just got mine back from the dealer for the same issue, they had to talk with Dodge. They said it was the vacuum pump making that noise when you have your foot on the brake. WEIRD ! But i still love my truck !!
