CAI throws P0402??

Follow-up to yesterdays thread.....got up this am about 30 outside and started truck to warm up for about 10 mins before going to work. Sure enough had P04DE code. Went to work and notice it was very sluggish and seemed to be straining to go up hills. overdrive kicked in 4 times which had never done before to work. get to work ok. during lunch break i popped the hood to take a look and see if i could see anything obvious. Sure enough the CAI tube had come off the tubro intake. Put that all back in place and made sure clamps were tightened. Left to go home and it ran great. had acceleration back and no codes. I don't know if this fixed my issues but check your CAI and boost tube connections.

Update…regen process went crazy. over a couple of days the regen process kept initiating. finally the exhaust filter full power reduced see dealer message came on. never lost power. ran for a few days trying to troubleshoot. took to dealership yesterday to see if they could do a standing regen. no luck and said i would need new pdf filter assy $2700 and not covered by warranty. I’ve contacted chrysler about the warranty and banks about the boost tubes. waiting on replies. id the exhaust system was clogged you’d think it would affect engine performance but i see no issues. not sluggish, exhaust temps seem normal on all 5 sensors (550-700 degrees), all temps and pressures seem normal. i’m thinking of pulling the sensors out of the dpf and cleaning them to see if that’ll change anything.

That is very interesting because that actually makes much more sense! I called Banks after I received everything and asked them about this issue. They said most of the vehicles that come in there for installs get all of their products and the ones they do aren't getting these codes. If you all do get these codes, please help us all out by calling Banks and sharing with them as much information as you can so they can try and troubleshoot it better. Of course, first thing, pop your hood and make sure everything is still all connected properly. These diesels put out a LOT of boost!

That's nuts. Do you regularly use any diesel additives? Have you tried at least to run something like HSS Diesel Extreme or Archoil's Diesel fuel system cleaner? Why do we always get the impression that most dealers are just out to take our money?!

never used additives. put a little no gel last winter since temps where in the teens. other than that, nothing.

Using a good diesel additive will help you in a variety of ways. First is increasing your cetane (like octane rating for gasoline,) which results in a more efficient combustion cycle which in turn means less soot being leftover to go downstream through your EGR and into your DPF. Also, avoid idling any more than you have to or if you do have to idle for a while, use the high idle feature with the cruise control and idle up at 1,100 rpm. A good diesel additive also helps clean and protect your injectors, protects your fuel by dispersing water, and adds lubricity back to the diesel fuel that was lost when they took all the sulfur out, which helps out your HPFP. (Particularly necessary if you have a Bosch CP.4)

ok thanks for the info. any recommended brands? CP4 replaced by recall earlier this year.

I like Hot Shot's Secret Everyday Diesel Treatment because a little goes a long ways, and it helps disperse water in your fuel which I don't believe the comparable Archoil product says it does. You can do 1oz per 25g of HSS EDT or 2oz per 25g for a performance dose. I've used Stanadyne and Optiulube products before and they are good, as well, but they require more product per dose than HSS.

Something like this Archoil product every 6k miles or so will help out a lot, as well.

@AirRyan there are other folks that have stopped using additives and have reduced excessive regens. It may be worth trying, but also realizing it may not help as much as advertised.

ok thanks for the selections. I’ll start using after I resolve dpf filter situation.

That sounds like anecdotal and uncorrelated data to me. Most diesel fuel in the US is crap. Biodiesel makes it even crappier. Here in Texas they have a low-emission diesel mandate that requires a minimum cetane rating of 48, but that is only for the major metro areas in Texas. If you are on the West coast and can get 100% Renewable Diesel (RD), (not to be confused with Biodiesel or BD,) that stuff is like super-premium diesel and will work on all diesel vehicles. From what I have seen in pictures on 100% RD, it looks like at the pump it says R99. Valero just brought online an all new RD plant in Port Arthur, TX and along with their Lake Charles RD plant, they for the first time in 2023 have made more RD than BD. I would love to find a RD pump at my local Valero!

I started using Stanadyne back in my mid 90's on my first diesel that I drove in college in a Jetta Wolfsburg edition diesel; before they have went TDI. The science is there. I recently read that Stanadyne was contracted by DoD to come up with an additive to help the HUMVEE's GM V8 diesels run better on JP8 in the Gulf War 1.

Considering that almost all the excessive regen data is anecdotal it’s right in line with what’s out there.

There is science behind additives, I was simply pointing out that there has been a correlation between fuel and fuel additives and the excessive regen. Nothing more or less, same as with air filters.

I hear you. I suspect most of those folks were most likely getting bad/old diesel and then found better diesel. That would be more probable. If you have bad diesel to begin with then additives aren't going to do much for you.

What I do know for sure is that a higher cetane diesel results in a more efficient combustion cycle that in turn results in less soot as an output of that combustion. Less soot to go through the EGR and less soot to even enter into your DPF. Less soot in your DPF in turn results in less active regenerations.
