6.7 Engine Air Filter Confusion

I’ve only had 2 regens since I installed the FG filter in mine. 1 right after I put it in and the other 1 1003 miles later at the 24 hour mark. Now with 300 miles since the last one, it’s up to about 1/16 on the gauge. It had moved up to about 3/16 but I did about 30 miles driving 75+ and it dropped back to 1/16 and has stayed there for a while. This is the longest stretch I’ve seen other than the towing trips I’ve done. I don’t think the truck is having any problems, it’s all my drive cycle. But I do think if it was tuned just a hair differently to where the egt’s were a little higher, it would only regen every 24 hours. I’m trying some fuel from a different source and I’ll see how that does.
Fuel source and drive habits definitely contribute. I’m at 639 miles and roughly 16 hours since last regen cycle. Currently showing 0% on the gauge. I wish I had tracked the regen cycles when I had the white and black mopar filter in the truck but I swear it was constantly in regeneration.

Update:

Called Fleetguard and spoke to technical support:
1. They have no record of that filter being changed
2. They do not show an updated part number
3. If they made any significant changes to the filter, they almost always update the part number to reflect the changes.

Called Geno’s and spoke with them:
1. They think it could be a case where Fleetguard subbed that filter out to another plant / manufacturer temporarily in order to get “caught up” on the significant backorder
2. They can not get any info from Fleetguard as to why the changes.
3. Mopar will not give them any info as to why the glue strips cause havoc with some trucks, but they have indeed inquired several times.

Isn’t this fun?…..makes me want to sell the truck and go back to my 1993 12 valve….ignorance was bliss!
My 18’ was the same way. Put fuel in it and drive it. Bought it late 2019 new and got it marked down 15 grand off of the sticker. Still having nightmares and knotted stomach from getting rid of it.
Had I kept it, it would have 48K miles on it now.

I kick myself for every prior truck I’ve sold. Any one of them I would take back.

I absolutely love this 2022….when it isn’t giving me a headache. I would love to just put fuel in it and drive it, but it simply isn’t that easy. Too much money invested and too complicated to let it all to chance. It would be different if the dealers had answers to all the issues but that simply isn’t the case. They can’t tell you why certain air filters cause P0299 codes. They have no clue why some trucks are having P2459 codes. Too many unknowns.

I definitely think it’s the quality or experience of some of the dealer techs. No diagnostic experience or skill without having a computer tell them the exact problem. But it’s not just a problem in the automotive industry. I definitely think it’s an additional EPA restriction that has been added without equipment upgrades ( sensors or tuning) that’s causing the problems.

I drove a truck for a living before I retired and wife loves road trips. Been wanting to visit Glacier National Park anyway. A little farther for me from Louisiana.

Just really need to know the who, where and when.

Ok, here is another one I haven’t seen mentioned unless I missed it. My local dealer installed MGA 46930 in mine during a warranty visit. It is a Microguard filter.

Does it have the glue strips ? I’ll have to look for one at O’Reilly’s when I go to town. They handle MicroGuard

Not to derail this convo but to add to the overall questions/troubleshooting discussion...
Those in here with 19+ 6.7 with frequent regens, how many of you are also having tappet/lifter tick? All the time...only at idle when warm... Above idle etc..
It seems likely that there could, for some, be concurrent issues happening which would contribute in tandem to more frequent regens and/or limited passive regens.

I’ll have to check. I noticed on the worksheet that it wasn’t mopar part number and looked it up. I haven’t opened airbox and looked.

Man, now I'm even more confused by this "Filtergate"! o_O

Is there a good filter to buy anymore?

I think the air filter is just the first link in this chain. I am positive that it is something farther downstream that’s causing the issue.

Well…

“46930” also happens to be the exact same part number for both the WIX and the NAPA (NAPA always cuts the first two numbers so it becomes 6930) Microguard is a brand carried by O’Reilly auto parts.

For confirmation I just called my local O’Reilly location. They have that exact filter in stock. Had the employee physically pull the filter and inspect it.

I asked two questions:

1. What color is the foam around the top edges of the filter? Answer: BLACK

2. If you flip the filter over and look at the bottom, are there two strips of yellowish colored glue running across the very edge of the media?
Answer: YES

So you can rule the microguard out. Like always, the image they depict on the website is not the same as what actually comes in the box. IMG_4366.jpeg

That’s the same image I saw. I’ve been getting my FleetGuards from Amazon. Just got one a couple of weeks ago. It is the original FG AF27684. But you have to be careful of who the actual vendor is.

I agree. My instincts, and some insider info, lead me to believe it is related to the MAF sensor. Utterly ridiculous that this is the kind of issue we have to deal with on these trucks, with all their engineering, and all their refinements.

Wouldn’t it be great if this group had a dedicated contact who worked directly for Ram?? Someone who could identify when there’s a significant issue facing their loyal customer base and help connect us with corporate technical support / engineering. You know, so that these issues could get to the right people and be fixed?………

Absolutely. It would be great if we knew there was a dealership that had a really good diesel service technician. I wouldn’t mind driving 100 miles to get something fixed and fixed right. And then throw the strike in on top of it reducing parts availability to zero. I started trying to get the Y43 recall done in August and can’t even get the dealer to answer the phone in the Service Department. Left messages and emails. Crickets

When I searched the part number I saw the same pic above and was thinking there was hope. Seeing how the filter is black with glue strips we already know what this means...... junk.

Has anyone recently purchased a Mopar filter, I hope they didn't change theirs too?

On a positive note we have some awesome members putting in the research, thanks to both of you!
