Change to the 1500 gear selector instead of handle shifter?

Now I know there's gonna be those that are gonna be like, "WTF? WHY?!".

Well I got used to having the selector knob and i figured it was in the same spot as the 1500 4wd selector.
I searched and i couldnt find anyone to have done it which either means: 1. no one in their right mind would actually WANT to do that. 2. The gear shifter isnt electronic.s-l1600.jpg

Can i remove the lever gear selector, standard in HD trucks. Then add a 1500 gear selector knob from the 1500's?

OK, so you have an HD truck you're asking about (some 1500 owners do wander in here from time to time.)

Column shifter (Lever) gear selector is only in the Diesel - SO/68RFE and HO/AISIN trucks. The Hemi trucks with the ZF 8-speed have the dial selector.

And I'm not aware of any DIY to change them over. The column shifters for 68RFE and AISIN are cable driven AFAIK.

@Jimmy07

To each their own but the dial shifter would be something that would push me to another brand if I was looking for a gas truck. With that said, there is some real inginuity on this site and if it's possible I'm sure you will get an answer.

Not possible. Like brutal said, your transmission needs a physical link between the shift lever and transmission. The dial shifter is for an electronic transmission that is shifted by communication over private canbus between the dial shift “computer” and the transmission. There is no physical linkage between the two (except wires).

Glad it's not possible to change the CTD gear selector to a rotary shift version. I could just imagine looking for a low mileage late model truck and climbing in the cab for a test drive. Talk about a WTF moment!

I have the dial shifter and it's not so bad once you get used to it. There is one huge thing I don't like about it though. In the year I've had it, there's been 5 or so times I pulled into a spot, threw it in park. took my foot off the brake, and realized it stopped in R and was backing up. No I don't actually look to see if it's in park. I don't think anybody does. I just grab it with 2 fingers, turn left until it stops and those 2 fingers slide off, and take my foot off the brake.

That would be one hell of a silly reason to buy a lesser truck because of a shifter….

If the 8 or 9 speed ZF ever comes to the CTD, it's going to be a dial shifter and fully electronic control.

If the more unlikely rumored Allison lands, I can't say what they use.

I've a terrible habit of stabbing the parking brake as I'm shifting into park... ;)

I'm definitely more a fan of the dial shift. It takes up way less space, and I don't feel the need to fondle a big shaft to make my truck go. That said, I will admit getting into recent Jeeps a few times and muscle memory causing me to crank the volume all the way up when I tried to shift the radio into drive!

I drive so many different (rental) vehicles that it's not often muscle memory gets me. That said, most of them are sedans with a center column shifter and I don't have the dial shifter to deal with now.

Yeah, most rentals I end up in have a center console shifter as well, but Wranglers and Gladiators have a large volume knob in almost exactly the same spot as the Ram dial shifter. It's a mistake you only make a couple times.

Gotta love muscle memory. After driving the 01 6 speed i tend to get in to the 19 and stomp the imaginary clutch with my left foot lol

I typically try to avoid anything that's not a sedan. Impossible to secure anything in a non-existent trunk. The Avis preferred counter folks are always confused when I request a downgrade or lateral to any sedan (when I can't change through the Avis app) - or ask them why I didn't get a President's Club level lux car instead of an SUV. LOL.

Post Covid has made car rentals a crapshoot. I’ve shown up and found that my only options were a small pickup or a 14 pax van. I miss the days of 100 cars to choose at Hertz.

I've had a Ram 1500 assigned (but changed it) and got stuck with a minivan once. The only other option was a 14 pax van. LOL
