Oil, Fuel filters and air filter changes

I used swivel between the two extensions and a wobble extension on the socket.

I really should invest in a few wobble extensions.
As well as both metric and SAE crows feet sets if you've not done so already. Might have used mine 6 or 8 times in the past decade, but when needed, there was no possible substitute. Living an hour from civilization enforces the need for fewer trips to town.

Finally finished changing out my fuel filters this weekend. Learn a few lessons:

1) Youtubers make it look way more simpler than it is, time wise. That crap took me a good 30-45 minutes (including drain time and struggling to monkey my hand/arm in the engine bay)
2) The OEM filter caps suck. I have 1-2 solid uses left on the engine fuel filter cap, but the chassis fuel filter cap is toast. the 28mm portion is rounded due to it being torqued on by the dealer previously. I'm going to replace both with either more sturdy caps or go with an alternative fuel filter set up.
3) I'm not the biggest guy in the world (not the smallest either), not sure how you meatheads are able to get your forearms in the engine bay area to get that one off.
4) Despite my pain and struggles - it's way better than forking a few hundred dollars over to the dealership.

I usually come out with less meat than I had going in.

Try rounding this one:

Had no idea there was such a thing. Almost choked when I saw the price, but shortly afterwards saw the price for the POS OEM plastic filter canister cap. Really????

I updated the original post stating to use a 28mm 6 point socket and not a 12 point.

Glad I'm not the only one, my right arm from elbow to knuckle looks like a bobcat got a hold of it.
yea I saw that one, wish they made one for the chassis filter as well w/ drain plug.

everything is harder the first time you do it.

I can do fuel and oil filter changes in about 15-20 minutes. Now.

I use an 18” extension for the engine filter, I do not need a wobble. Put the socket on the filter cap, thread the extension down to the socket. Go.

I added the FASS system so I don’t have to mess with the plastic caps. In 2018 Ram used a metal screw on water separator in the rear now Ram uses the same setup as the fuel filter just turned the housing upside down. The FASS system is faster to change the filters are less expensive and you can run them longer.

I got one of those aluminum caps from Geno’s last year…never could get it to seal. I also put A little O ring grease on O ring.

And often lower filter efficiency. Not any gains to that setup on a stock truck, or even a moderately modified truck.

Filters are less expensive because they aren’t as good. If you find filters equivalent to OEM ratings I’ll bet you find the cost is similar.

Did my annual service today.

I did not need an extension for the engine mounted filter, the 28mm socket from Geno’s worked perfect on my 3/8” ratchet. The filter was more of a PITA to remove than on my 2018 thou. The Aisin dipstick could have been placed a little further outboard.

I unbolt the dipstick bracket when I do mine.

I have a question to those who are having issues with the OEM plastic fuel filter housing caps. Is everyone using the correct 6 point 28mm socket? I have only changed my filters one time but the 28mm 6 point was snug and I don't see how I could round it off. Maybe I got extremely lucky when I changed mine out, I will have to pay closer attention the next time I change them.

I've seen some trucks that had their fuel filter caps installed by the same 800lb gorilla that installs some of the Hemi oil filters. On my last SRT I had to mangle the factory installed oil filter pretty badly with jumbo channel locks to get the damned thing off and then retighten the oil cooler to the block.

I use the same socket and too have never had issues rounding off the cap. A little patience and the right tools go a long way IMO.
