Long crank

Hey all, I just purchased a 2023 Ram 2500 CTD. It only has 200 miles on it. It seems to crank a long time before it fires. Sometimes it’s 2-3 second’s sometimes it’s a little longer. It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s warmed up or cold. I searched the forum and read a couple other posts about long crank times on new Rams, but no one commented on if they actually asked the dealer about it. Does anyone have any updates. Just wondering if this is normal. My last diesel a power stroke fired right up.

Same thing in my 2022 ram 3500. I’m picking my 2019 up from them next Wednesday. I’ll ask about it.

It’s normal, and I bet if you use a stop watch it’s not nearly as long as you think… but it is longer than it needs to be. I’m pretty sure it’s a programming thing.

My '23 5500 has a "long crank" compared to what my '21 3500 was. It is a programming thing as the dealer said they change the programming every year. My 5500 is also "de-tuned" compared to my 3500 so that may play into it as well.

The C&C engine isn’t the same as the SO or HO motor, so it’s not de-tuned.

Same issue here on my 23 Limited. My 2008, 2013, 2020 6.7's did not crank nearly as long. You know its vastly different than before when my kids noticed and commented on it!

My passengers commented on it the other day. It almost seems like it’s going to not start, the it fires up.

Probably cranks longer to get oil to places before getting to idle. I forget what year but there was a cold start oil issue on some trucks and the programming was changed to correct it. Personally I would rather have a bit longer cranking time to ensure oil is in all the right places than having a quick 5.9 style Start.

Seems good in theory, but the long crank isn’t consistent and if 1-2 seconds makes a difference for wear then there is a design issue… which is know now isn’t the case.

Wife comments all the time “what’s wrong with your truck”

Cold start oiling issue was about it not automatically idling up or allowing you to set the idle up before it was warmed enough. It also changed the max operating RPM's while driving cold.

Correct. Happened circa 07 from what I remember.
